Hey guys,

So Matt (EWSEthan) and I have been hard at work recording some more songs for a 2 song EP that we'd like to drop by the holidays. So far, we've been making major progress!!! Right on schedule.

We decided to use Quad tracking for the first time, and are getting excellent results. That's right - FOUR guitar tracks. The main guitar tone is still a nice L-R spread, with the quad L-R's mixed in at about half the main guitars volume. (Note: if you're not relatively good at double tracking, don't even bother quad tracking. You gotta make sure all 4 tracks line up TIGHT) Since we both play almost identically, we flipped a coin to see who would quad which part. Matt did the pre-choruses and choruses and outro, and I did the verses (which are only doubled) and bridge.

Please remember, this is a ROUGH track. Barely any EQ on drums, no reverb, not even leveled THAT great. Just a quick mix to hear some guitar tones.

The recording chain is as follows:

Guitars: Main guitars: Suhr Standard with SSH+, OR Warmoth Tele with custom wound 9K Duncan.

AMP: Egnater Mod 50 (of course) with Various modules. Tung Sol 5881 tubes. I will list the V1 preamp tube below as well.

For this tune:

Verse:
Strums: Fender Strat --> DLX (5751) , doubled with Tele --> VX (5751)
Rhythm Guitar: Tele Deluxe w/Duncan --> SL, doubled with VX.
Chorus:
The MAIN L-R tracks are SL2x (C9) and EG5 (JJ) with a Suhr. The "quad" tracks mixed lower underneath are a Tele with the VX (5751) and SL (NOS).
Bridge:
Same as chorus, but with the ERECT (C9) instead of the EG5, and using buckers for the quad-tracks, not a tele.

SPEAKER CABINET: AB Audio 112 (same dimension as Egnater oversize 112). Celestion G12K-85
MIC: Sennheiser E-906 (NOT 609), pointed right where the dustcap meets the cone.
PREAMP: Presonus Eureka. No Comp, no EQ. Gain knob turned up to where the signal is nice and strong.
SOFTWARE: ProTools 6? OLD version.

EQUALIZATION: None so far. This is the RAW sound of the guitar, amp, and speaker.

BASS: Please pardon the clankiness. The potentiometer for the bridge pickup took a dump onme lastnight, so I had to record using only the Jazz Bass neck pickup, which sounds like a thin P-bass... YUK. I usually use both and get much better results. Gotta install some new pots...

WTF is the guitar solo man!!!!  Guys, that sounded really, really good

Sounds great man!!! I'm a bit surprised you only have 1 mic on there. But for your type of music, I think the guitars sound great.

Can't wait to hear some vox on it. We need some RockStarNick / EWSEthan solo wanking too!!! :) I hear some EVH tapping coming soon ;)

Eric

What are you trying to say Eric????? Our type of music = :emofag: :grim: :gay: :gay: ??????

Hahahahaha.

I think the clarity of the e906 mic, and the open-ness and wide range and balls of the K85 sound pretty amazing for a single mic on there. AB'd with a SM57 on a V30, and it was NO contest. The SM57 on the V30 sounded like mush.

You said it...ahahah..not me! :)

Yeah. the times I had the e906..i liked it..but didn't love it. But then again...at that time...i was in the "speaker of the day" territory...and kinda lost perspective. Going back to K100s....for a long time now...I have the perspective now... And the M75s... that helps to.

Sounds great guys! I agree--Very nice sound for a single mic. Looking forward to hearing more.

Nick,

That sounds really good for a ROUGH clip.
At 0:28 you should go right into 0:36, at 1:30 you should go right into 1:37 etc.. haven't heard the vox, so don't know if it's timing thing, but it has more impact if you skip that part.

Very nice!

i think single mic on the cab is just fine.

especially when you multi track.

if you are burning up two tracks at a time per take and quad tracking a part you will have 8 tracks of guitar.

you could sum the two channels on input to save space i guess.

Great tones Nick and Matt. Great sounding song. I really like this. If I were producing I would alter the EQ on the snare a little, it's honking somewhere maybe in the 200 area. I'd dip that. Then I would cut the crunch rhythm after the middle break at 2:32 and then add it back in after the backwards guitar at 2:46. Add some additional clean guitars in that middle part, lots of delay, sparkle city. Then you need something at 3:34 in a higher frequency/octave up area during the part where the drums go double time. Give it some sparkle on top, maybe mirroring the part you added to the clean guitar in the middle break. ;)

Or just leave it alone and do what your doing, cause that's cool too!!!!

Great minds think alike, Tommy! :D

We're nowhere NEAR done with overdubs. We're doing some outro octaves, more ear candy, etc.

And the snare is totally raw. I gotta do a high-pass and mid EQ and the whole 9 yards on it. It was 11PM and me and matt just wanted a quick MP3 to share, so we bounced it as-is.

Sounds good so far guys. Can you post an update when you have a scratch vox on there?

Thanks everyone! As Nick said, this is really just rhythm tracks (and terrible sounding bass!) so we will be adding a bunch of leads and ear candy going forward. Also, once a better bass track gets on there, this will drastically change the way the guitars sound for the better.

As for 1 mic, we really thought we'd get more BIGness from multiple performances rather than differences in mic EQ curves. We did however, tweak EQ on the modules being layered to complement each other and perhaps make up for differences you could get from different mics and/or placements.

The difference between double and quad tracking is night and day for us.

We will keep posing updates!
