No offense to whiever but it's hard to tell. I been looking for some vids with like non doom demos just straight through a 6505, Engl or Marshall with an od but i'm leaning towards Gray wolfs because i hate low mids and they have an upper mid thing going, so i guess i'll try them. I was wondering what cone, doping, wattage best fits my situation though.
I'm a big fan of Weber speakers. I have a couple of cabs loaded with Weber's and will eventually load a few more cabs with them. Of what I have now, one is a 4x12 with Grey Wolf/Silver Wolf mix, the other is a 212/1x15 that has Grey Wolfs and a 15" Blue Dog.
If you're not a fan of lower mids stay away from the Silver Wolf. That one is lower mid heavy. Not in a bad way, but if you don't like lower mids you probably wouldn't like the Silver Wolf. It does complement the Grey wolf extremely well, but it must have a bit higher SPL. I have the Silver Wolfs on the the bottom of my mixed cab and it's a little more prominent that the Grey Wolfs.
The Grey Wolf is my favorite of their speakers and a great choice if you want upper mids. The quote in their description about familiarity and not having to relearn the amp's EQ is from me and I still feel that way. The Grey Wolf takes the core tone of the Blue Dog (sounds similar to a Celestion Blue) and blends in the best parts of the Vintage 30, Classic Lead. It has a great upper mid character without being in that frequency range that gets ear fatiguing like a V30 can be.
Since you mentioned Marshall, ENGL & a 6505 I'm assuming you'll be going for heavy crunch to high gain saturation. For options I suggest:
Power - You want the total watts of the speakers/cab to be at least as much as the amp you're using. It's best to go for 1.5-2x the watts of the cab. Basically more watts is better in that regard. There may be a very slight difference between the 15-50 watt and 75-100 watt ones, but it's minimal enough to not worry about.
Dope - Go for heavy dope. This will control the cone movement and cone cry with heavy distortion. Using distortion with speakers that have no to medium dope sounds like shit. The speakers sound like they're screaming and not in a good way. You can go pre-rola if you want a little smoother top end, but with the Grey Wolf I don't think that's necessary.
Dustcap - Do the standard british dustcap. The large dust cap; like the pre-rola dope, will smooth the high end a bit, but the Grey Wolf was designed to sound best with the standard.
This is the best video I've found that demos the tone cult line and isn't doom. It's IR's but sounds near spot on to what the Grey Wolf and Silver Wolf sound like in the room.
Hope this all helps you out.
