School me on buying a Marshall 1960 cab

Thanks! My cab has 6 screw handles. Doing some looking, it seems the newer metal handles I'm seeing are 8 screw & just a little taller, but I haven't figured out if that means I'd have to remove some wood to install them..? Not a deal breaker but if I can find metal bolt in then I win.

If you're not hung up on having perfect handles, I found a few in stock (around 10-12) that have minor imperfections in the chrome handle bar (light scratches/scufffs). I'm selling off these B-stock handles for $25 per pair plus $16 shipping in the lower 48 states. So that would save you $25 on a pair of handles, if you can hang with the light imperfections on the chrome.

Good think you checked that stereo jack plate, those things have to be resoldered or rewired correctly as they seem to use some really thin wire and connectors.

Alright so I picked up a 1960B w/ G12T-75s used from GC. $327 to my door. The wood & speakers are great. The tolex is rough, but nothing I can't fix with some wood glue. The handles & panels are all plastic, I'd like to find metal replacements. The plastic is all cracking from age so this isn't a real new one.

The PCB had some cracked solders but I fixed them all up & it's good to go, although I do plan on replacing that thing with a straight jack & hard wiring it for stereo duals.

It sounds freakin' killer with most of my heads! Here's a quick tone comparo vid I threw together. I think you can cover a LOT of tonal ground when armed with a V30 cab & a G12T-75 cab.

A few months ago I purchased 2. I was looking for an early 80's JCM800 1960B. Found a great deal on GC used site for about $350. Then a month later a local guy on CL (wound up being one of the bass players for Parlament Funkadelic) was selling about a 10 year old 1960BV with V30's for an unbelievable price that I couldn't pass up. It was in great condition and brought it home for $250! Both sound great. Point is, if you have time the good deals on these will come along.

I upgraded to metal handles on my 1986 JCM800/1960A cab. I knew the handles I bought were a bit taller (all the ones I found were taller and different # of screw holes), but it was nothing a Dremel couldn't take care of in under 10 minutes.

For what it's worth, Peavey 5150 cabs (and their others I assume) are the same dimensions as Marshall cabs, and have metal handles stock. Because they don't have the Marshall brand name (and have the Peavey name haha), they can be found for around $200 but prices are starting to come back up a little.

Just bought another 1960B. Found an offer I couldn't refuse! A recording studio in L.A. was selling off some old gear, picked it up for $117. I thought that might be like buying a used rental jeep from Moab, but for that price fuck it. The cab is in pretty rough shape, the Tolex is ripped off & the grill painted silver. Ridden hard & put away wet for sure. It was originally a Vintage cab but they replaced the V30s with 16 ohm G12T-75s that look pretty new. (They all ohm out at 13.5-14 ohm though..) The wiring job sucks but imma fix that up nice. As UGLY as it is, I plugged it in and it sounds GOOD. Very broken in, oh yeah. One funky thing I found though, hanging from the top right behind the speakers is a curtain of fabric covered in Red Hot Chili Pepper logo. I'm guessing for some sound damping, might have helped with recording? Where this cab came from if it could talk I bet it would have some cool stories.

It could be an 80s cab with just 1960 on it, but only if it has a round mono input jack. I believe if the cab said JCM 800 then it was matched up with or sold as a set with an 800 head. If you get an 800 cab you will get either T75s, 65s, or the dreaded G12M70s. So make sure someone will open it up and check for you, just to avoid the 70s. The stereo jack denotes the JCM 900 intro and later. Sometimes though, GC will put "300w stereo" next to every cab they have..so look closely for an 800 label in the lower left corner. They mislabel all the time, I have a 74 original Marshall cab and have a Fawn 1978 blackback cab because of this. Have to look closely at the cab pic. I think you are better off grabbing an 800 cab, if you want 65s or the better sounding(IMO) 75s.

I fucking knew better but I recently ordered a GC.online 300W/16ohm JCM800 cab w/ cup input WITHOUT having them check the speakers. Friggin 8ohm 70s in it. I only ate $34 shipping and the PITA to return it but I did get about $150 worth of bubble wrap out of it and a box the size of a garage.

So lesson learned, ALWAYS have them check the speakers.

This is what you should expect. The rating on speakers is impedance. You're measuring just resistance. A speaker in good condition will typically read about 2/3-3/4 resistance with an ohmmeter compared to its impedance rating.
