I had an EC256 which I bought on a whim. It was nice, but I played an EC1000 and the next time I played my 256, I found it to be the dead hunk of grubmeat it was.
I went to trade in for the EC1000 but they had a used ESP Eclipse. The ESP Eclipse was miles ahead. The fretwork was perfect, the sound projected, it felt just so nice to play. The more I played it, the more the EC1000 was irrelevant.
I did pick up an EC1000 later on, but anytime I wanted LP tones, the ESP just sounded better on recordings and played nicer.
I picked up a Gibson LP Standard about 2 years ago and an LP Custom about 6 months ago. Despite being the same shape, I couldn't state which out of the ESP Eclipse, LP Standard or LP Custom was the "best". I find I reach for the ESP more than most but all of them rock! Personally, I feel that the LP Standard and LP Custom are world's apart but neither of them deficient in any way.
But if an LP shaped ESP is what you crave, go for the Japanese ESP! Compared, the LTDs don't cut it. Just my personal belief.
Oddly, I also have an ESP MII and a LTD M1000... I really cannot tell the two apart feel/sound wise. They're both on par.
