Uli era is by far my favorite...70's Scorpions is like 70's Priest to me, they both had great success in the 80's which I enjoy as well, but they were at the top of the heap for me in the 70's. By the time the 80's came around, they evolved well with the times, but they were also amongst Van Halen, Ozzy with Randy, and so many other bands that were taking it to the next level. Uli was doing things before that I consider truly groundbreaking and the band had a bit more raw fire which I love.

love classic hippy era scorps and ulrich john roth (and rudy’s lil bro) were the godfathers of metal shred along with angry neoclassical rocker in black-gone-peter pan, gypsy rich blackmore.

BIG difference being mike and richie were wise enough to leave the singer alone with the mic duties, and not demand lawrence welking an unusually sinus infected german jimi improv in the middle of a metal concert, thus risking turning the whole enchilada into the muppet show.

I love having to scroll past your humongous, idiotic political pic every time you post. Thanks for that.

I'm a fan and concert-recording collector of Uli-era Scorpions. Live footage from this era is priceless. Note the huge tremolo arm on his Strat.
Those pants are the same ones Jimi wore and I wouldn't be surprised if they are Jimi's actual pants, being Uli was a partner of the woman Jimi was with when he passed.

I love this era Scorps.
I read an article one time where Uli claimed he only used a wah for effects. There is no way he got that level of gain without a fuzz.
Uli never got the praise he deserved in my opinion. Great player. Rudolph was buried in this mix for sure.

I've known Uli since the late 70s when he recorded Electric Sun.
I got to play his Super Tremolo, and it is pretty aggressive, but I agree he had to be using some sort of OD or Fuzz. He was always vague about his sound from Scorpions days. The only thing he ever mentioned was a Roland Jet Phaser.

Very cool you know Uli. I’ve got some bootleg DVD’s of some live Electric Sun shows from the old days and he is just stunningly good on these. Actually bought these on VHS. That’s how long ago it was. Had to burn them to DVD. Last time I saw some more recent live footage he was using a Blackstar amp. Still sounded like Uli!

Uli fucking kills, dude uses a preamp boost in his guitars and with that super trem it plain smokes. He is THE most relaxed cat while he plays complex shit it's unreal to the point of almost falling asleep relaxed...met him a few times too. He has always been a monster.

I believe I can hear that in the fluidity of his playing and the way notes kinda all join together.

It's like there's no "thinking time" between micro phrases and what not.

Not sure if that makes sense, but that's what I hear.

He's a very focused player. He uses a solid classical foundation for his note choice and throws in the rest with ease. They got lucky when they found him. I would like to know more about that story.
