Saturday Scumback Speakers Holiday Sale bump...

How would you compare your blackbacks with the celestion standard greenbacks in terms of eq? Do yours have the sames highs, mids, lows? do you "darken" your speakers from the originals in any way? thanks

The BlackBack Scumbacks use a chemical treatment that gives them more upper mids, with equal bass response as the original BlackBack models. The regular M75/H75 models are purposely made to have more low mids, and creamier highs than current Celestion G12M's. I haven't really compared the current Chinese made models to mine, since that's not a tone I'm going for. Due to that it's tough to make a comparison since it's apples vs oranges. Not sure if that helps or not, but it's the best I can offer considering.

Monday Scumback Speakers Holiday Sale still going!

"since that's not a tone I'm going for". This actually may help me out by way of negation. Can you describe this celestion g12m tone youre not going for? thanks jim I'm interested in the blackbacks

Anything from the current G12M/G12H/V30's from Celestion or the sub models are not what I'm going for tonally. I've made no secret that I like their speakers from 1983 back to 1966. Most of the classic rock guitar/rock band heroes recorded with those older era speakers.

And since they're producing speakers that don't sound like the original pre rola, BlackBacks, etc, that's what I focused on. I had way too many players tell me "You need to recreate a 40 year old cab/speaker tone without the vintage issues and price. The current models don't get it."

So that's what I went for, the older tones, that have more mids, body and warmth, for the most part. The current Celestion models all have too much upper mids, and treble, for the most part.

The 60/70's speakers are going for $300-600 each now. That's just way out of reach of most player's budgets. It took a lot of experimentation, cone treatments and doping treatments to dial in the tones I get from my models. I'm happy with how close they compare to the originals I have here. I'm not looking to compete with Celestion's current offerings, they just don't sound right for what my clients are looking for, and I've had/have them all here to check out for comparisons.

I like their old stuff, made in the UK, back in the 60-early 80's before they got bought out by the Chinese conglomerate corporation that owns them now. They let the bean counters compromise the tone and quality, IMO, and that of my clients.

So that's just a niche market I identified and provided a solution for.

That said, I still have several old pre rola, rola Celestion and G12-65/G12-80's here that I load into original cabinets as I find them. I just posted a new thread here called NOCD: 67 Marshall Straight and it sounds great. But it's got $2000 worth of old Celestions in it, plus the cost of the cab, wiring, hardware, etc. I just don't see many people shelling out $3000 for an old cab, unless they've got an original Marshall Plexi or Metal Panel head to pair with it.

And that's why I make speakers for that tone at 1/3rd the price of the vintage originals. Speaking of which, I've got a bunch of shipping and speaker building to do, so I gotta run! Hope that answers your questions.

Here's a Scumback BlackBack BM75 clip David Bray just did for me for VH tones.
