SD Black Winter or BK Nail Bomb

Having watched the video....to my ears the BW sounds better in almost every instance. The chord work is where I hear it the most. The single note stuff, not as much. The BW's are also significantly cheaper than the BK Nail Bombs. The Nazgul's made it into this discussion but those aren't really the pickups I'm vetting. I can certainly tell why the Nazgul's would sound amazing deeply detuned.
I agree that tone wise the BW sound better. I only highlighted the Nazguls because they tend to hold articulation/note definition a lot better ime when downtuned if that makes sense. At which point they also tend to sound within the same ballpark, to me. Apologies for getting off course with your thread.

No worries at all. Your input is extremely valuable!

The nail bombs will have that inherent “zing” characteristic. It cannot be dialed out. It’s a good sound imo but you had better like that flavor.

Curious.....can you define said "zing" characteristic?

I've seen a few threads regarding BK pickups. Many times they get dogged pretty hard.

Tried to like the BW's twice and couldn't. Much prefer the DD or many BK. To me the BW had this inherent overdriven fuzz thing underlying the fundamental tone, don't know how else to explain it but I couldn't dial out.

i have BW in my ibanez RG in Drop B and i cant stand it, just a flubby mess. i have a nazgul in a older yamaha in drop C and its cool. i like the invader the most honestly for passives
What about some Lundgren M6? And that Iron Man everybody keep mentioning from time to time.

M6's are the one modern pickups I've enjoyed and have a few sets of them, but may be a bit modern for what some guys on here would like. It has great cleans too, which no one ever mentions lol. The Iron Man is very good too (better than the pickups mentioned in this thread), but prefer many vintage high output pickups to the, like the vintage Mighty Mites, Schaller's, Dirty Fingers and some model Bill Lawrence's

Yeah, BW has this sort of spongy feel, too much of everything type thing going on.

Yeah I remember your recommendation well. Not easy to find and try those in good condition though. And I am curious to do some pickup swapping one day.

You know the story....I have a guitar with pickups that are underwhelming. Want something hot to handle metal.

Reached out to Tone Nerd as his Wicked 8 seemed to fit the bill but he moved to Japan and can't make those right now. Drag, but understandable.

Having read multiple threads discussing high gain pickups, the SD Black Winter and BK Nail Bombs come up a lot....as well as many others.

What are the plusses and minuses of these two sets?

Black Winter ALL DAY

I tried a nazgul here recently & I prefer the BW to that offering also. I had been curious about that one too.

Black Winter has been the longest pickup reign in a single guitar for me and I have a few guitars and in all I've tried various pickups over time. The BW is the only one STILL that I know for sure I don't need to try anything else in that guitar. It's a snarly mids type pickup that responds really well to picking input. It's a very clear pickup and rewards you for playing like a man.

I have the Blackened Winters in 2 of my guitars and love them. I haven’t tried the original Black winters. I also have had a guitar with Sentient/Nazgul set and didn’t care for them.
