This tax thing, and 1099 shit has everything all fucked up. I don't mind doing PPL gift with people here, or certain other places, but I tend to draw the line on high ticket items...

An amp popped up I really want - to me, $2300 is a lot of money!

"$2300 PPG, or pay MY fees, and pay shipping".

WTF? Sellers now expect to avoid the IRS, incurr no fees, no shipping costs, have their cake, and eat it too, while buyers get fucked overpaying, (if they want something bad enough). It's just mind-boggling how screwed up the market is today.

Just a rant, I guess. Curious if others are noticing this same trend their and thoughts.

Look at local buyers, they offer way less than asking price and then want the seller to drive it to their house. Definitely goes both ways and there are good and bad transactions.

Yep, that's why I don't list anything on CL. It's a joke here locally.

I have some things for sale. I will only do F&F but if the buyer has concerns, I will do 1/2 down and 1/2 upon delivery/inspection. Also, I do the price which includes the shipped/insured/signature required. But that’s just me.

I find that on the FB groups people are like that. Expect their price plus shipping and fees. I generally don't buy much on there due to irrational expectations of sellers. It's much easier to spend 5% more and buy new. Hell, the way some of these people price stuff, it's actually more expensive than I can get new.

It is also getting to the point most used gear listings are like getting bitch slapped. Buy for 80 bucks less than new and use pp gift option + shipping, its obviously a sellers market , and reverb turning into craigslist II probably doesn't help. It's very rare I see any used gear I want to purchase, if someone bought it used then they want to sell it for the same amount, and the fact it's even more used doesn't matter, lots of causes for this of course, me personally I have accepted flipping gear isnt happening for me until some of this gets back to " used gear reality" this post is surely not directed at anyone in particular, especially Naplam, his pricing and listings are very in line with used gear. Peace

These days, people’s greed and hunger for money knows no bounds. Very distasteful.

Right. People think they're sitting on a pot of gold. Like those assholes that got their $225 Fortin TS-9 and listed immediately on Reverb for $450-$600.

I saw several Marshall DSL's on Reverb for $1500-$1800!!🤣
JCM900's for $1500.

Pretty soon they'll be asking buyers to pay their capital gain taxes if they turn a profit
Here's what the guy said about $2300 PPG.. "Hey there, unfortunately F&F is the only option I can accept. The "Goods and Services" option forces me to register as a business with PayPal and triggers serious tax liability"

And I suppose that's my problem? I guess he doesn't want his fees covered, afterall.

When I'm the buyer I'll pay the PP fee and when I'm the seller I typically won't, I expect the buyer to. My reason is because as a seller I am not protected but as a buyer I am. So imo the person getting the protection should pay the fee. And no way am I buying a $2300 amp without protection.

Regarding shipping, I think it's just part of the price. Always negotiable but that's the price.

And the 1099 tax thing, I'm just not worried about it. I lose enough money on my yearly gear transactions that I'm just not even going there...total non-issue in my mind. IRS will never be able to audit enough ham n eggers like me to justify any extra taxes so they will target much bigger fish...as they should.

However I don't even want to buy anything on Reverb/etc simply because I will be charged tax when I feel I shouldn't be (not referring to tax law...referring more to common sense/fair taxation in my mind). And I don't social media so I'm pretty left with CL, TGP, and here. And I'm cool with that.

I sold a DSL Marshall a little over a year ago got 700.00 plus 65.00 shipped. Those were 5-650 used all day long. Mine was mint.
But 1500-1800 fuck that. Keep it.
I sold my Diezel 100 Einstein for 1800 last year. People gone crazy.

I get the sellers perspective but I don't agree with the tactic. I'm in the same place in the sense that I don't want the tax liability, the difference is that to me that simply means I'm not really listing/selling gear anymore outside of Craigslist. I'm not comfortable telling people I only accept f/f so its local cash deals. Bummer for sure. Not selling = not buying...

Right now we are in a weird time where some people have realized the gear market has already turned south. But there are some people still convinced the market is still sky high and is there to stay. No it's not. Sellers are already caving way before they would have a year ago.

It is very unfortunate that now all individual parties have to act more like a business, taking on expenses (tax, in this case) that they didn't have to before. So like a business, these individuals are turning that around and forcing on these costs on people that buy. You already paid for these costs when you buy new items. The tax change and requirement to act like a business with these person to person transactions has killed the game/fun for me, guess I wont be trying "new" gear anymore unless Im sure its something I want to own in perpetuity.

I can agree on the fee part. And I would pay it, if I wanted it bad enough. However, it seems as if the seller won't even give me that option. Not protected on a $2300 purchase? I don't think so.

As far as the IRS, I lose money on virtually everything, and have for the better part of the last 2-3 years. Even before the pandemic, you had to give shit away more than not, if you wanted to unload something.

Good points. This forces us back in time to when were sending money orders or paypal with no protection again. Only businesses or individuals willing to act like a business get protection on transactions. Now you gotta be able to prove you lost money or broke even if audited. It's a hassle more than a problem.
