I think the important part of the question was “stripped down rock”. In that case. Maybe 4.
Something like tuner, overdrive, phase 90, delay.
Or tuner, fuzz, vibe, reverb.
Etc.
I want it to sound raw and I want a tube amp.

I'm late to the Pedal Party.. I committed to Digital and MIDI decades ago, but am willing to learn.
I have no Board, only 2 Pedals on the floor; an Analog Delay and a Univibe.
I still prefer Digital Delay on high gain leads, but rolled back and cleans tones are cool with Analog. I like that warm air thing it adds to the sound..
I'm waiting on a Chorus and will get a Tuner and that will make 4..

Too many pedals?! No pedals, all the pedals...I don't judge by how many pedals. If you're good, you're good. If you're not, you're still up there doing it while I play at home or with friends so, good on ya.

I feel with an analog and digital delay, verb, flange, was, tuner, and a boost anything is possible.. okay maybe add in an eq.
