What is your experience with this pickup?

(For reference, I believe the new Seymour Duncan Alt.Metal pickups are the same as the AHB-3 EMTY pickups that were renamed after Mick Thompson went to Fishman.)

I decided to do some pickup swaps after being dissatisfied with the EMG 81 which sounded hollow and undefined in the bridge of my ESP LTD Arrow guitar. (Mahogany body, maple set through neck, rosewood fingerboard).

I tried the Seymour Duncan Ahb-3 EMTY Neck pickup in the bridge today and was underwhelmed. Being an Alnico pickup, I was hoping it would be like the EMG 85 in the bridge, but it's very different.

What I liked: The tightness in the low end, It's almost as tight the Ahb-3 bridge pickup. The output is perfect, slightly less output than the bridge version so you can raise it higher towards the strings and it won't be crazy hot. The palm mutes are punchy and tight. Great harmonics.

What I didn't like: Although it has less treble, there's a brightness somewhere in the high end that makes it harsh and unpleasant. The mids feel almost unnatural. Just feels like it belongs in the neck as intended.

What I'm undecided about: The low mids are more pronounced, nothing too over the top, but I prefer the overall sound of the AHB-3 bridge pickup in the bridge as the treble extends further making it more cutting with better pick attack, and without the harsh brightness.

Conclusion: The EMG 85 and especially 85X sound better and more natural in the bridge than the AHB-3 N. It may not be as tight but it sounds full, beefy, and the mids are more pleasing to the ear for riffing.

So far, the pickups that sound best in the bridge of this guitar from best to worse are:
1. AHB-3 Bridge (Tight, punchy palm mutes, balanced mids, cutting top end)
2. EMG 85X (Slightly tighter bass and more high mids/treble than the 85)
3. EMG 85 (Fullest mids, more low mids, deeper bass, rolled off treble)
4. EMG 81X (Slightly more open mids and more dynamic than the Emg 81)
5. EMG 81 (Very tight, scooped low mids, pronounced high mids, hollow sounding, poor note definition)
6. AHB-3 Neck (Tight, punchy, harsh brightness, unnatural mids)

X models are more open and less compressed. Not by much, but I'd go with that..

i like the AHB-3 the best out of the 1, 2 & 3.
2 is stupid hot and just a crazy pile of mids.
1 was a bit too bloated and hot. actually the EQ sounded nice to my ears, i just don't like how it combined with the amp, which has enough gain with low output PUs and enough low mids on it's own.

also tried the AHB-3n in the bridge but don't remember much, other than it was still hotter than i hoped for.
the bridge was fun to play and a lot tighter. more alive, less compressed than the EMGs. but after i while i heard a cocked wah quality to the tone and i was more into softer stuff, so i sold them...

yeah, but they also bring out the fizz To x

yeah, but they also bring out the fizz more.
To be honest, I didn't find any of them fizzy in this guitar with a Mahogany body. I think the Ahb-3 bridge gets closer to the high treble frequency range but not quite fizzy. The guitar makes all the difference though. I once tried this pickup in an Alder body Phil Demel Jackson and it did bring out some fizz in that guitar

no i just mean the the EMG81 vs the EMG81X, but it's more the amp than the PUs, so if your amps doesn't have it...
ass long it's not too much, a bit fizz is always there and part of gainy guitars...

I did like the 85X. I found there is a shift in the mids from low mids to more high mids over the regular 85 which works well in the bridge. I just wish it had a bit more treble to it

Ah I see what you mean. My amp is a Mesa Mark V 90w. I can shape the sound quite drastically with the eq. There is something that the pickup adds to the sound hitting the front of the amp that is pertinent to the overall sound

I may give the 81x another try. It does work very well in one of my other guitars
