I have a Gibson LP Custom. After changing the stock 300k pots for 500k pots, I decided they weren't quite what I was looking for.
I currently have the Slash set loaded in and I'm really enjoying them.
I like that they really bring out the natural tone of the guitar and it just sounds fantastic with all my amps, even the Pod HD and Triaxis. The neck pickup is just brilliant, one of the best passive neck pickups I've ever had in a guitar, apart from maybe the Seymour Duncan Jazz. However, they are fairly low output pickups. I do sometimes find they lack that extra little oomph even with the amp's gain and mid control wound up. That's the only reason that I may move them on; I love what they do, I just wish they would do more of it.
Other pickups I have tried are
- Super Distortion / Dimarzio Liquifire: Super D was great, Liquifire was too muddy for me. It was the only pickup I didn't like at all.
- Dimarzio Super Distortion/PAF Joe: So far the best dirt tones I've had in there, but a fairly brash clean tone. I'm thinking I may pair the SD with something else, maybe.
- EMG 81/89: So far my favorite combination, but I have EMGs in quite a few of my guitars. I'd rather keep the LP a grab and go passive guitar.
- BKP Nailbomb set: Sounded great. I preferred the Dimarzio SD in the bridge, but again, lack of decent clean tones.
I'm waiting on a Duncan Full Shred and Jazz I've ordered for another guitar, but I'll try try these out in the LP next.
The good thing is, bar the Liquifire none of these pickups sounded bad in the LP; on the contrary they actually sounded very good! However, whatever pickups I decide on, I want to order up a set of gold covered pickups to keep in with the design of my guitar so need to get the experimentation done.
