Shipping an expensive amp.

Use the cans of spray foam, the yellow stuff. And "crate it into the box" basically cover the amp with trash bags and spray it in the box. Make it in 2 sections, top and bottom. Irecently order a shipping box from mesa and for 45 dollars that us what they sent me. Worked perfect and fit perfect.
I've thought of that before. I actually made a form fitting guitar case years ago with that expanding foam stuff and the guitar wrapped in saran wrap. It was a bit of a mess but worked out pretty good.

Buy a plane ticket, put it in a road case, and carry it on? That is a lot of cash to trust the shipping gorilla's with.
That can work, and I've done it (sans road case!) but there are caveats. Depending on head size, it might not fit in the overhead bin. Even if it does, it may not technically fit the airline's allowed dimensions, so you're at their mercy regarding whether they will require it to be gate checked and stuffed into the cargo hold or not. Assuming it's dimensions will fit the bin and you clear the baggage check, TSA, and the gate and are now hopping on the plane, you're now hoping that there is actually space in the overhead bins. If you're on a relatively full flight, that might be an issue. My last flight with my amp, I got through all the official hurdles no problem, but when I hopped onto the plane the bins were almost completely full. I did find what I think was the last or second to last spot I could stash the amp, but a few more people or a different distribution of the luggage in the bins and I wouldn't have been able to fit it.

Which foam in particular would that be?

I hated shipping amps back in the day, and it sounds ridiculous now. I only sell local unless it's someone I know these days. I'll forsake top dollar for the convenience.
