So I have a 07 SHIVA non reverb coming my way and wondering what to use for effects. I have the first run of the Intellifex which I hear is great thru these, I have access to a Replifex, or do I purchase a M9 and call it done.

Not sure if you're aware or not, but the loop on the Shiva blows. It's a tone sucker for sure.

I have a 20th, and compared to the loop on the SLO it is great. :-)

 Wow

Did I say something wrong?

The SLO loop just wasn't as flexible, and really only "liked" stuff that would take rack-range signals. The Shiva loop works a little better. I guess it isn't perfect, but I don't run into the issues the Ecstasy guys do when running a Fender Twin setting on the Green channel.

I don't mean to lead someone astray if I have said something out of line or have misunderstood.

Not at all. I didn't know the loop on the SLO was garbage too.

It works okay, it is just WAY hot, so forget running most analog pedals in the loop. I ran an X3 Live in the loop and padded it down, which is what I now do with the 20th Shiva. Works pretty good.

IF it's the traffic green Shiva with the rack and pedal send, you can use rack gear OK like the Intelliflex and it sounds O.K. but it takes some of the sparkle away. You also have to keep your channel volumes low and tweak it a bit. You can use the pedal send with pedals but I would recommend getting a MXR Micro amp and run it last in the chain to boost the return signal. I was told it was not so much the out put but the input gain on the return side is to cold.

I use a Shiva 1 x 12 combo (with reverb) with an Ibanez Tube Screamer and a Sheba Drive Overdrive through the front end with a Boss Chorus and an MXR Carbon Copy Anologue Delay through the effects loop.

Last week I was going to a rehearsal and for the first time ever decided not to bother with the effects board and used the amp with it's own channel switch.

It sounded absolutely stunning and better than I've ever heard it. I'm now just waiting for the right gig to try it live without effects.

Effects loop isnt that bad. But frankly less is more esp with this amp.

so whats the best way to go on it if im using pedals on the 20th go in the rack in??

I'd say do what it says on the tin. Pedals into Pedals or Rack into Rack. Give it a go. I have a friend who does pro mods on pedals and amps and he's a keen believer that there's no right or wrong way of setting up. Do what's best for you.

;)

Guitarists will often insist that certain effects (e.g. chorus, flanger, wah) belong in front of the amp, while certain others (e.g. delay or reverb) belong in the fx loop. This is because they are accustomed to using their amp as a distortion effect, and they like the distortion at a particular place in the chain. If you are not using your amp as a distortion effect, you can ignore those claims. Plus that approach does not address the question of instrument-level versus line-level.

I found the loop pretty Ok with rack gear, especially if it has input and output volume. I really liked a cheapo Lexicon MX200 in the loop of my green chassis Shiva.

Something to keep in mind: the 'Pedal' and 'Rack' FX send jacks on the 20th Shiva were mislabeled on the first production run of amps. Make sure you are using the correct jack if you have an early Shiva 20th.....

I'm using a nova system in the loop of my el34 shiva w/ verb and a jh1 wah in front. I do notice some high end loss with the loop but I just use the bright and adjust the eq back to where I want it.
Sounds amazing! I have the best sounding rig for my needs ever.
