Hey Guys

Well I have exhausted the power tube market (settled on Tung Sol Reissue 5881 as my main tubes), tackled speakers (settled on warehouse vetran 30s) and so onto preamp tube testing it was. So I was running EH 12AX7s in my B'Man and SL2 modules. I love those in the B'MAN and liked them in the SL2 but I felt the gain get a bit muddy and some loss of detail at higher gain settings with single coil guitars. I hear Bogner was using the shuguang 12AX7B (aka silver dragon??) so I thought ahhh what they hell. Ordered 2 and I must say the gain is much sweeter and defined and no low end loss of detail!!! Even at lower master volumes in the MOD50! So rad. No real noise or microphonics either. Very nice better than Tung reissue 12AX7 and the EH 12AX7 if high gain is your thing you will love them.

Gotta say I ended up with a chinese in the V1 slot in the SL2 and I really really dig it!Hey Matt I put one in the box for ya! :D

Dude! You are the best!

Tele, where did you order the Shuguangs from?

Do these work well in any other modules as well? BMan perhaps?

I have just been using the EH but may have to try the shuguang 12AX7B. Did you compare to Mullard? Better than the Tung Sols? I may try them in the B Man and the MHG. So, juts in the modules, right? Not in the amp itself? Do you ever tough those? What about JJ preamp tubes? I hear great things but my tech says Tung SOl and EH are the best. Oh, the choices.

BY the way, I have some JJE34Ls on the way. I much prefer the SED EL34s over the 5881s so I am thinking I'll love the JJs.

Sometimes you just have to try things yourself to (know)if in fact it is better to you and not me.That being said I really really like the 8th gen chinese tube in my SL2,and Matt it sounds really close to that GT I'm sending you.I have some of the ones telefied link to and they are damn good to :D gotta try!*&CK I love thes AMPS

Well...I am sold on the chinese preamp tubes! The SL2 and BMan are even tighter with more clarity and gain. WOW.

Im gonna order a bunch of these and slap them in most of my modules. Awesome!

Does the SL2 have more gain now!

i tried the chinese tubes, and I really like them in the EG5. I am using the Chinese in V1 of the Eg5 and the Tung Sol in V2. I tried the same for the SL2, but since Channel B is more of my soloing module, I liked the sag a little better of the EH than the Chinese. I do definitely love the Tung Sol in V2 of both. The EH made the SL2 sound a little more rounded for me and smoother which gave it a little bit more of a "petrucci" vibe w/ the stereo delay and reverb of my MPXG2. keep in mind, i don't have a mod50, but a m4 w/ a vht 2/90/2 power amp w/ 6550's and use G12T75 celestions as my main speaker. i did pick up some of the classic lead 80's from warehouse speakers for my 2-12 avatar cab, so i'll curious to see how that goes. I got the Tung Sol 5881's ready and waiting though for my Mod 50 once its done and sent to me ;).

What sounds good in the T/D and Vox modules for you guys. I haven't had a chance to check out a chinese tube in V1 of either of those. I'm really curious to hear the EH in the Vox, because I could see it having an interesting effect in V1 w/ a Tung Sol in V2 giving it a smoother distortion on Channel B. That's for this week to test.

I'll let everyone know how it comes out :).

Once again we tonally agree haha I too have a chinese in the B'Man and was about to post and say the same thing :)

Put some chinese in the SL2 and BMan for a session yesterday. OMG. Sick tones. They never sounded better!

Sooooo guys...

I keep hearing that the SL2 is so "hair metal" but does it excel at just pure raunchy rock tones as well??

I'm contemplaiting it for my first module alongside the T/D. OR get a MHG before they are gone...

Looking for Cantrell "Facelift" tones here.

i personally don't think that the SL2 is hair metal at all. I mean you could get those tones if you want, but I feel its a good classic rock tones (on channel a), think unmodded JCM 800 type of gain. CHannel B to me is more of a highly modified marshall tone. My opinion you can get that guns n roses tones from it, but also get some other hard rocking tones from it. It can get very nasty. In my opnion the SL2 is does something similar to facelift tones, but i feel the EG5 is more in line to AiC as its a little punchier and has a little more pronouced mid range. I absolutely love the EG5 with the chinese tubes in it. Probably one of my favorite modules.

HTH.

Thanks for the response Eric! I will probably own both at some point. I might just pick the MHG right now so I can have one before they are done with.
