What's the tonal differences between the SL and the Brown eye mod?

SL: Slightly less gain, woolier midrange, more of a Plexi-type feel, more dynamic/sensitive to touch.

Brown Eye: More gain than SL, no wool, more "brown" in the mids, easier harmonics but still pretty dynamic.

I thought I would get rid of a gain module when I bought the Brown Eye, but it sits perfectly between the SL and EG5 in my M4.
Those three are keepers for me.

The mids on the Brown Eye are just perfect.

I've been playing rhythms on Brown Eye and leads on SL. I love the softer attack of the SL, too.

Doubleneck should chime in -- I bought the BE from him!

You wanna talk about sellers remorse. I'll give you the history of this module.

I asked Dave to make the B channel sound as close as possible to The Song Remains the Same "live version" and the A channel to sound as close as possible to The Rain Song "live version" and l believe he nailed it , hence my avatar doubleneck, major Zoso fan!

If Mark ever sells this module to someone else without contacting me first, I'll hunt him down!  :codeak: :powpow:

So far I'm loving the SL. It takes pedals well and has enough gain for me. It can get into VH territory with Ch B cranked. It also cleans up like an old Plexi. With the mids and treble cranked with the BB and Treble Boost off it has that bright early VH tone. I'm still in the honeymoon phase so I'll see how I feel after more gigs. I'd still love to try a BE.

The descriptions so far are pretty bang on from what i recall about the SL. Its a great module and i'm sure i will grab another stock one soon.
I still use the Brown Eye SL all the time. Here's what i love about it:

1) The right amount of Gain. It's not really a high gain module...very useable cranked.
2) It's not really a true dual module..its the same circuit on A and B (identical gain etc)
3) I love this because it doesn't get too bassy when you switch to a higher gain setting on Channel B...same sound with a bit more gain.
4) Takes pedals very well.

Here is an old clip i did of Hot for Teacher using a VH backing track. I used a 2008 Strat with a Suhr SSV+ Hum in the bridge...

Thanks Buckeyedog ! Maybe one day i will actually finish the whole song :)
Forgot to mention the clean part on there is the DLX module channel B.

Has anyone modded their SL to have two Ch. A's? I love Ch. A but I'm not bonding with Ch. B.

I'm sure you could do that. I agree that channel A is pretty great. When set clean, it totally nails the cleans I used to get from my '77 JMP. Then when pushed, it's the most versatile crunch I've ever used!

My Tube Driver sounds great with the SL gain at 9:00. I'm getting killer crunch tones with the gain at 12:00. It reminds me a little of Michael Landau's base tone w/o the pedals. The BB kills through the SL.

That's cool. I really like the B side of the SL - it's just enough gain to get a John Sykes-ish "Is This Love" lead tone. A side is arguably one of the most versatile channels.

I'm not a big pedal guy, but I bought a little Coolcat Transparent OD and it does sound great thru the SL.

How are you setting Ch. B for a Sykes-ish tone?

B Gain: maxed
Bass: Noon
Mid: 1:30
Treb: 2:30-3:00
No switches
B Master 1:00

I also got good results a/b'ing w/ the Brown Eye last night for that type tone. I still like the SL because it's a little hairier and has a little more sag to it.

Thanks Marvcus that's very close to how I set mine. I also found a cool low gain setting with my single coils. This sounds killer on the neck pickup. It gets that Jimi slightly broken up Strat tone.

Bass: 11:00
Mid: 9:30
Treb: 2:00-3:00
No switches
A Master 3:00-full

I play a lot of country gigs and have a DLX. I could get by with the clean on the SL no problem. I have to see how it sits in the mix but so far it's equally as cool as the DLX clean. With the BB pushing the front end it gets flat ridiculous. I love this module and will be keeping it stock.

:poke: Hey Bruce where's the E2 ;)

Wags, you nailed it with the BB through the SL. Just upstairs rockin' it out and it's just crazy good. Lovin' the tones.

The BB does sound great through the SL.

Does anyone have a good VH recipe with the SL? I have found that the presence needs to be higher to get the bite that Eddie used to get. I'm still missing some twang. A lot of the tone is probably the power section and the GB's getting hammered.

Does the Brown Eye sound a little tighter and brighter like a late 60's plexi? The SL sounds a little warmer than the Plexi amps I've played.

Did you listen to graymatter's Browneye clip in this thread?? I thought that sounded quite a bit like Eddie's tone. I do think the SL is not quite on that "exploding amp" tone Ed has with those mids/highs. Close maybe, but warmer/smoother. Maybe with a Graphic EQ boosting even more those frequencies?
