Is there a mod that could be done to an SL module to increase drive? The SL is a great module and I really like the round smooth quality of the overdrive. What I am looking for is that extra overdrive sustain.

Things I know:
You can push the input with any number of drive pedals (mild to extreme). I feel like this method is a tradeoff between the extra drive versus the tone changes that come from pedals.
Use an SL2 (I have one and like it, however I find the tone to be a bit thinner in general)

Just wondering if the drive could be increased/modified without ruining the original tone character of the module

I know you're saying you don't like how drive pedals color the sound, but the Timmy/Tim pedals are supposed to be almost completely transparent.

Iv'e got a BB Preamp coming. I have heard some good things about these as well

I've asked Jeff this same question, and his answer was no.

Same thing here. I ended up just getting an SL2, but it is actually a little too much at times (though better a little too much than not enough). If only there was something right in between the two. I asked Jeff as well --no go.

Friedman does the Brown Eye mod to the SL.

I've thought about picking up another SL just for this mod. Gotta keep a stock SL; it's too good.

I think the SL should probably just stay stock. You are right it sounds huge...much bigger than other modules. It is addicting. I had a JF modded Randall Plexi that was as good as the Egnater SL, but it had a mod to give it more gain. If I pulled the knob out, it had way more gain! But, it retained the hugeness and tone. It was a nice mod! I may even consider this over another SL.

Your thoughts on a Plexi type amp sounding bigger is true. That is a big reason why I have been using my VHT ST so much. It sounds bigger than my Mod 50, except the Plexi module. I do have to use a boost pedal to get it into the gain territorty for some songs...but with the Xotic BB....it retains the size and for the most part...the tone.

Xotic pedals almost sound like an Egnater module, LOL. I also know more than one guy who swears by the Xotic pedals with VHT amps....and these are guys who are obsesed with the tone of their VHT. I know guys who have the TIM pedals and they collect dust. A good friend has many Monte Allums modded Boss pedals he prefers over his TIM and Timmy.

Good luck!

I agree with all, the SL is just a great Plexi feel module. I'm looking forward to getting my BB in front of it!!!!

The BB Preamp is the best OD / distortion type pedal I've used to date. I have pretty much gotten rid of everything else after buying it. That and the Suhr Riot...are the only pedals I really own for boost / overdrive / tube screamer stuff / distortions I want or need.

You'll be in awesome hands w/ the BB! :)

You get one of dem suhr pedals??I can say after hearing that mutha in person,it was

I think you'll be thrilled with the BB.....but if you find you would rather have the boost built into the module - have a Randall Plexi modded by Jaded Faith. It is every bit as good as the SL....with the addition of the gain mod.

I have found the HooChee Mama pedal to be excellant for boost without spoiling the sound.

Also the Clark Gainster which is very similar

Would love to be able to compare the Hoochie Mama to the Suhr Riot and Xotic BB.

the suhr riot is NOT a boost. it's a flat out distortion box...that really sounds like a friggin bad ass marshall tone in a box. it was amazing how good that pedal sounded!! :)

Did you stop using the SD, Eric? I am still on the lookout for the perfect TS type pedal. The Sparkle Drive was not my thing. I might try a Cusack Screamer or mod an old TS-9. The Carl Martin Boost/Kick looks sweet.

I haven't used it in a while. It's been off of my board for probably 3-4 months. Replaced it w/ a Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus...which i LOVE! The BB has been my personal choice for boost...the past 6-7 months. I will be selling both of my Sparkle Drives..as the BB preamp is just my personal favorite by far.

Eric

I LOVE the BB as well but it doesn't do the mid boost TS type thing for when I need it. I guess if you EQ the bass and teeble you could sort of bring up the mids.

You know what might be great. The new BB MB (mid boost). This will give me both in one for when I need it.

I have been wanting to try the Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus! I never have the best luck with chorus live....always seems to get lost live so I have been using a modified BF-2 flanger that I love and just set it for a chorusy sound when needed. Getting some amazing chorus sounds. It seems to cut through better live than chorus. It is also not subtle, you know when it is on...which I like. Have you had a different experience at gigs with chorus?

My favorite chorus has been the Jacques Meistersinger. also nice that it has a level control.

My BB was delivered today. As hoped it really pushes the SL well. I spent about an hour with it, and within 10 minutes I was really enjoying myself. So to those that made the recommendation "great job".

From a tone stand point the BB does not add too much color to the tone. I found it provides a bit of extra focus and the liquid sustain I hoped for (to my ears).

On the SL A channel with a bit of guitar volume control (and the BB) I was getting into a D*mble type of bite, SL B great singing Marshall solo tone. Additionally I liked it with by T/D module.

In fact I think the T/D - SL - MOD 50 combo along with the BB will be all I need for local live work (Blues, Classic Rock)

Thanks
JCC

JCC, I haven't tried the BB with the T/D. How is that? How much gain is on channel B of the T/D? I have the Bassman and the BB kills on that but the Bassman channel B has lots of bass!

I knoe the SL sound huge and clean like a real Plexi. Do you find the BB retains that hugeness of the SL?

:)

I love the BB with ALL the modules I've tried. It sounds awesome on both channels of my XMAN, DLX, VX, expecially. And as a killer boost to ChB of the EG34X ChB. Oh I love it on there...to get a liquidy smooth lead tone. The BB is my personal favorite boost / overdrive / TS type pedal.

The way I have it setup really warms up the mid-range in the right way.

My settings:

Gain 9-10 oclock
Volume noon-1 oclock
bass - 1-2 oclock
treble - 10 oclock

That's really similar to what EWSethan sets his up too. Killer killer pedal. Definitely one of my favorites for sure! :)
