SLO 30 vs 100 bottom end?

Buy the hundred, pull two tubes to cut it to 50 watt (half the ohm load on the selector switch) and run it into an attenuator or a Fryette Power Station.
I did this with my JSX which tamed it significantly back in early 2000s. I got that idea from the old HArmony central.

Had both side by side and it was tough to decide. The fact that it was hard to decide should tell you something. Ended up keeping the 100 for the bigger sonic footprint, but I eventually sold it too. I have to say, there was something special about the 30. Not quite as big sounding, but the tone itself was more interesting to me and if I were to buy another SLO, I’d personally grab a 30
The 30 is fun every time I play it. Lil bit more energy to it at lower volumes.
Really dig it thru the matching vertical 2x12.
Way more practical. Less $, great size and volume.
100! Lol

For my money if a bigger bottom.with oomph is what I want I go 100 over 50 let alone 30 any day.

As for SLO...I'd get a used 100 for the reason that I'd want the DeYoung tranny in it.
I had Mike build me an Avenger with it that slayed.
Heck I wouldn't even want O-netics iron it which is what the last before BAD had.
And I have no issue with those in general since they used to make the iron fir the THD stuff.
Yeah, I remember the clips from the HC days. That amp sounded incredible.

I tried to like the 30 watt twice. The tone was there, but the flabby low end was the thing I couldn't overcome. No boost would tighten it up to my liking. It was just plain tubby. I'd like to see a tight switch like they've done on the SLO II Synergy Module, and the gain on the OD channel cleaned up. It's almost EVH red channel levels.

I was interested in the 30 and then the x88 but something about BAD is just bugging me.

Big Ed! Hope you're recovering well.
I'm real interested in the X88IR. I got no problem with BAD (I owned a BAD SLO) as long as the QC is good.

The 30 has a higher noise floor than the 100. Probably due to the smaller layout. So that’s something to keep in mind too

I'd like to see them reissue the Avenger. They have the better loops on the BAD amps - Reissue the Avenger!

I'm recovering well enough considering I didn't.live too healthy lol.
Which is more important than the financial thing. Even with the amazing support and with the donations I'm in the hole more than 14k.
So it'll take a lingwhile to straighten that out.

But he'll I'm at least still here.

Back to topic, how that BAD SLO compared to older ones with DeYoung trannie if you compared?

I didn’t hear no difference to tell you the truth. I’m not that critical of stuff like that. Doesn’t even matter. I had to sell mine because I was moving, but I miss having it.

Caveat: I haven't played any of the newer SLO's.

Having said that, my old SLO 100 has a great set of masters and sounds great with the volume down. I have no problem playing it at home volumes and sounding great. Sure, it sounds even better when the volume gets dialed up, but it still sounds great at relatively low volumes. For a guitar amp, it has a linear, clean power amp, so there's not any kind of drastic change in the amp itself with volume changes, like a lot of classic amps: more volume is sweeter because of pushing the speakers harder and acoustic feedback on the guitar, certainly. Can't replicate that with anything other than volume.

Per above, I am serious tempted by one of the new X88IR's. I always wanted one of the old ones, and it seems like the perfect thing to put into a little home rack system for fun and games.

I'd assume they dropped the plate voltage on these 6L6's to have to run at 30w? Which would explain the flubbiness.

I've seen folks on the FB Soldano group modding their SLOs for a tighter low end and more aggressive, less smooth sound.
Some of their clips sounds pretty great.
I think @RedPlated could probably tighten one right up, if you ever revisit it.

Where are you guys gigging that you can get the goods from an SLO 100? I had a pre-BAD one and I think I had exactly one outdoor gig where I got to really run it at full tilt. It sounded glorious, but otherwise it was under-run. My SLO 30 seems a lot more civilized and it's a little easier to carry around, to boot. In a packed house you may have one guitar nerd in the audience who, standing against the back wall with his arms folded, says, "Yeah, the 100w sounds better."

I gigged the SLO100 at the theater we play the most at, I will say that was the only time FOH actually made me turn down- and I usually bring a Mark II Coliseum. I think I ended up around "2". It's a crazy loud amp, plus a lot of this has to do with where the mids sit since perceived volume is different from actual dB measurements.

I would love to play one at an outdoor gig.

That said the 30 has all the tone, but the push is just average where the push of the 100 is life changing.

Agreed. I had the 100 and 30 side by side and I liked the 30 tone better actually, but the push and sheer balls of the 100 is staggering, the 30 isn't even remotely capable of that headroom, not even in the same stratosphere in that department. The 100 was the loudest amp I ever owned and unusable for my situation.

I have my first practice with a new band Thurs. night. I'm bringing the SLO-30 and using a small Marshall 2x12 cab, the JVM one, smaller than the 1936. It's in a large industrial space, so I think I'll get to run it hard.
