So I guess everyone drenches their sound in delay now?

Especially young dudes and especially young sound dudes but even some of these old heads do it. I ask for no delay in the monitor but I can still hear the mains and it's like I'm shouting down into a cave. Then I go to a jam last night and dude's rig was like plugging my guitar into an amp in a swimming pool down in a canyon. It's like some dude who's gotta slather the mayo on his sandwich just thick pretty much ruining the sammich. Anyone else seeing this? Excess delay sucks ass.

Moar Delay, More Toanz, Moar Wetterer!!!

I'm thinking about making it a bone of contention at gigs. Especially with guys who want to tell me how to set up my rig. I think it would be a nice way of returning the favor. "YO BRO CAN YOU JUST SHUT THE DELAY OFF DUDE YOU WASHING OUT MY SOUND BIG DOG" right on the mic.

They all need a crutch, very few real players out there.

I can’t say I have, I live in a little epicenter here of jam, neo-funk and blues and I honestly can’t remember the last time I heard a delay pedal, certainly nothing obnoxious if there is in that scene at least. Some of them could probably use a little buttering up if anything

I"m not just talking about guitar but yeah there is some of that. But I'm mostly talking about guys running FOH sound drenching vocals in delay.

Oh yeah we are pretty lucky here with that, even the bars have top notch systems and guys running them. It’s actually young sound dudes that don’t even mix at the board anymore, they walk around the crowd and mix on their iPads

I use delay for leads or as a special effect sometimes, do you mean people have delay on for rhythms? Why?
I'm talking about lead guitar drenched in delay. I'm talking about vocals in FOH drenched in delay from self described "OCD" soundmen.

Lead guitar delay is great for metal, but why the fuck would you want it in blues lol

That doesnt make sense

I can see verb for a blues solo

Yes, we have that.here, QSC and i-pads. Dude wandering around, slathering tons of delay on the vocals. Is it like a learning disability so the delay helps them process the vocals easier in their mind?

Can we all now admit how stupid that 80's gated reverb snare sound actually was?
Loved it in the early 80’s, but I think they were using the gated rooms as much as or more so than a separate reverb. You still got the crack and natural sound of the snare. It got pretty hinky after ‘85 when they started getting really heavy with the verb’s and putting drum machine snares in but there’s still a bunch of stuff through the whole decade I still love the sound of that has big ol’ gated snares. Bottom line for me is if I feel I can hear real character of a drum in it still, I’ll be alright with it.

Love this shit

Haha well that sucks, I guess all you can do is politely ask for less, or threaten violence

I was hoping to get some strategies for handling it nicely here. Say stuff like "what's all that echo, it sounds like I'm yelling in a gym by myself" "maybe someone accidentally stretched one of da speaker cablez and now it's slower on one side" and "woah easy on the slapback there Duane Eddy" "I sound like Luke Skywalker when he was caught in that garbage masher on the detention level".

I run a space echo (re-2) doing Reverend Horton Heat type stuff, it just calls for it. Otherwise, if reverb can't get me there, I'm not going.

It's definitely extra greeze. I didn't use delay or verb for years, then watched too many Lukather vids, lol. Love the guy, but can't/don't play anything like him. Unfortunately I liked how it sounded though. I like one slap now, very low mixed. It gives it a bigger room effect. I went through a ton of delay and reverb pedals though, just to find something that worked in front, without being too much for what I wanted. Most pedals, it's off, or yuck. I'm sure there are more, but Strymon and Eventide are the only pedals that I've used that work for my purpose.
