The truth is that maple is not bright...I swapped an alder body with a maple one...(rest remained the same).
Maple has extented highs but they are not piercing...alder was harsher...
What makes you the assumption of brighness is the fact that the mids and high mids are way too tight...
Ùsing a pickup with thight mids makes the sound thin...choose a pickup with mellower mids and you are done...

Well we know how you feel! I've been bad with the necro bumps (snorting ashes?) last couple days. Just finding threads relevant to my current interests. It's not so bad!
Was close to pulling my SD but with all fillister screws and about 142K total load I'm digging it again.
Tight mids? Go on.

I am afraid I cannot give you a straight answer here...
Since I have played many different tone woods I have never made a direct swap such as alder to maple...
They are not entirely different but on maple the mids are tighter and sharper...the bass is always tight...it's not mellow like mahoganny or basswood...

Tried, it, tried to like it, just did not work for single pu strat. I also thought the cosmetics were just not to my liking with the coil screws. I understand the why, it just seemed to me that they took one could of two production pickups and put them together. GL would endorse anything with money involved.

Thanks to Nigel for resurrecting a bad memory. 
This was the most disappointing pickup purchase ever. I got one many years back and it just did not work for me. Then again, it was made for George and what he likes.
Now to be contrary...I will say the mini-humbucker neck version is not so bad and actually sounds decent. Just wish Duncan would revise the poles on them so that they actually fit under the strings in correct alignment for a strat.

I was also disappointed in the Screamin' Demon as a bridge pick up. I have an LTD Gus-600 that I had Black Winters in that didn't suit the guitar and I didn't want to spend $ on new pick ups, so I went through my pile of pick ups and settled on a JB in the bridge and a trembucker Screamin' Demon in the neck after reading up on it as a neck pick up, including a blog post on the Seymour Duncan website.
I use the neck pick up exclusively for cleans and Screamin Demon works well in the neck. It's definitely doesn't sound like a dedicated neck pick up and is a bit brighter, but it works really well for me.
