last year when my old band was touring with this band from texas, the guy from that band let me use his JCM 900 4100 if i believe and wow, that thing sounded absolutely killer! granted, the cab he let me run it through was a 70's marshall 4x12 but regardless, i still want to find one someday.

I liked the MKIII single channel I had just fine. They all (900s) need to be turned up louder than 800s since they are much more gradual to get to volume.

Tom Morrelo made his carreer with JCM 900 tone
He actually used JCM800 2205
Lots and lots of bands used JCM900s, especially on metal recordings.

I had a Jcm900 4100 Dual Reverb.. and i hated it. The diode clipping is horrible and the thing sounded better at low volume. Mine was super fuzzy and thin..

Do you ever use any dirt boxes? That's all diode clipping. FWIW, I felt the 50 watt models sounded better than the 100 watt models, but that's because you could crank them into PT sat easier. To each their own, but I think a lot of the stigma surrounding the JCM900 is just another form of corksniffing. People are gaga over the AxeFx, but those same people rip solid state, or even partially(and a very small part) solid state, a new asshole.

My experiences with the JCM900, having played out of a few differend Dual Reverb models (50 watt and 100 watt) was that they are very difficult to get to sound bad.

My experience with the 50 watt dual reverb 900 was :
I liked it well enough in a hard rock cover band....but after blowing up the output transformer twice, I had had enough. Even though it was still under warranty, I had to pay shipping (for repairs). I liked the tone well enough at the time, reminded me of Guns N Roses.

Along with the 900, I owned a 50 watt JCM800.... sounded way more muscular (with a boost). This was the early 90's I believe...I still have my 800, and it's is still rippin.

No cork sniffing in my opinion.

Fizzy and thin goes away at higher volumes.

Played one at the place we rehearse last evening. I don't remember the model but pushed with my tube screamer it sounded quite good! I was expecting so much worst as usualy these amps get so a bad rep of web forums.

In my younger days... I can remember saying NO to someone who offered trading is JCM900 head for my POD... D'oh!!!

BTW, didn't Marshall reissue these amps last year???
