So what's a JCM800 Marshall cab with original G12-80's worth?

With the right amp, like God
Agreed. Most players seek out the 75's, particularly the vented ones, but I've always thought the G12-70's and G12-80's are VERY overlooked and underrated. In fact I almost picked up another 800 cab loaded with some buy I have no more room for another 412 in my life at this point LOL

I hope that was a typo and you didn't mean the G12M-70.

The G12-80’s are nice speakers. I prefer the chewier voicing of the 444 cone version, but both are good. They sound to me a little bit like a more vintage-y rebdack. Darker, thicker leaning sound, not the tightest or loudest speakers (even my RB’s were a little tighter), but a nice chewy voicing to them. I like them similarly well to the vented 75’s, but like the T3120 version G12-65’s more overall. These are all nice vintage celestions, but not top tier/holy grail level stuff IME vs all the vintage speakers I’ve had

Both versions of the 80s are very good...444 and 1777...as are both versions of the 65...444 and 1777. 80s have a slight mid scoop to 65s, and IMO to the vented 75s.
All great speakers and perfect for 80s HR and heavier; maybe some 90s tones as well but I'm not familiar with the speakers used in the 90s other than Facelift, which was a Pulsonic GB loaded straight cab recorded in a stairwell according to the engineer.

So these are similar sounding the the early Vented G12T75's? I guess they were built from 1978-1982 from what I could find.

I like 12H-30's would I like the G1280's?

way way better. 1981 to 1983 [G12-80.] And they're not "scooped". They have a big firm bottom and a midrange that sizzles.

The 80s are nice; vs a 65 they have slightly relaxed mids but tighter lows...vs vented T75s they also seem a little scooped with less extended highs than the vented 75s. But, the next version 75s same label sans vents are more scooped than the 80s. Those non vent 75s are still good but very different than those first vented 75s.
If you feel 65s have too many mids then the 80s would be perfect imo. 80s have tighter lows too.

They are scooped, vs a G12 65. But not scooped per say. Just in comparison to vented 75s, and any version 65 which have more midrange. I've had all versions of 65s, and 80s. A few vented 75s too.

But, if you aren't comparing 65s directly to 80s; and just playing the 80s stand alone they do have great mids. Just not as much midrange as those other two I mentioned.

Depends on the amp mine are mid heavy therefore my tone is NOT scooped.
Like I said, they aren't a 'scooped' speaker on their own; but, if one has played a G12 65 the best way for me to describe a G12 80 is that they are slightly mid scooped and have tighter lows than a G12 65. When you compare both directly.
Both 65s and 80s are great speakers, and are the best vintage speakers to get that are still relatively affordable IMO. My 80s 8 ohm marshall vintage cabs are better to my ears but harder to find than Pulsonic GBs. For around 1K you can get 80s/65s...vs 3-4K for Pulsonic 1973 or earlier Marshall cabs.

Tons of mids there. IMO the 1777 g12-80s have less mids than 65s and old 75s, sure, but the 444 g12-80s have more mids than the previous 3 noted speakers. I’d say they even have more mid-mids than a v30. Though a v30 has more upper mids.

Have I mentioned mids enough times? lol

I must've had at least 3, maybe 4 G12 80 cabs and the only difference between the 444/1777 cones, just like the 65s, was the amount of bass and thickness overall. Mids on both cabs were identical, 444/1777. Just like the 444/1777 65s. The interwebz would have you believe that 444 65s are trash. Not even close.
80s are great speakers, no doubt but they don't have the upper mids of either 65. I had both at the same time, ran them together..that was a cool blend.
