Okay, with most amps out there you can say "Well ________ amp is based of {insert Marshall, Fender, etc). What is the Herbert based off? Even loosely because it seems hard to find anything that comes close. Anyone?

I hate saying this because I hate the amp I'm about to name, but honestly the Herbert reminded me of a Rectifier with a boost pedal that isnt even made, like a super duper boost pedal... like take everything that I hate about a rectifier and not only fix it... but put it on steroids... my singer actually said the same thing without me even mentioning it... I'm not saying it was deliberately designed after the Recto, but I thing they have some similarities in the characteristics of tone and such, which is strange because i LOATHE Recto's, and I absolutely Love the Herbert...If I don't like the VH-4 that comes tomorrow I'm going STRAIGHT back to a Herbert, I don't think I'll have a problem trading back, but I'm definitely a Diezel owner for life...

I think the Herbert is based on a Herbert, it just has its own sound! Every one has their own opinion but I dont think it is anything like a Recto, I guess they are both a more modern sounding amp. I actually like Recto for what they do but I couldn't go back to one now. Hell as of now I dont know what I could go with after owning a Herbert!!

Let me know how the VH4 turns out. It likes mids. So, make sure to turn the mids up past noon on channel 3, at least.

As for the Herbert being based off of another amp? I assume every amp builder/designer has to start somewhere to learn about circuit design. And then over the years starts to internalize all the "technique" and "rules" of designing a circuit to the point where he can build something from scratch to suit his own ear, regardless of where any inspiration comes from.

Most, if not all, art is the same way. Inspiration comes from somewhere, but most have no clue where. If the final result resembles something else, then so be it.

You will appreciate the VH4 if you spend enough time twisting knobs and get it tweaked to your liking. It is one awesome amp. Its longevity in the industry will far outlast the Herbert. 4 channels with independent EQ, MIDI functionality to beat all hell, a tone that is identifiable, and just an all around fine piece of equipment. If Peter never designed another amp, the VH4 will be his legacy. Of course, that is my opinion. I am sure there are others who think opposite.

I'm not sure if I'll get flamed for saying this, but somewhere along my travels and insights on amps and gear, I read or heard that Herr Peter created the Herbert to fill the spot that Bogner's Uberschall created in the Diezel line up. A powerful, hi-gain, looser, simpler (in the sense of playability) amp. What he did was all that - he achieved it - obviously, but also added a level of sophistication to the Herbert that the Uber is perhaps lacking. I own, happily, a Twin Jet. I don't think given the choice I'd prefer a Herbert. But I may have been 50/50 if I didn't have either and was presented with having to choose one. I have a V as well, hence my okayness with going with Reinhold's Twin Jet.

In fewer words, I've heard it is meant to be, and has exceeded at, being 'like' an Uberschall.

Steve, Steve, Steve...Steve...pass the pipe brother! You have obviously very little time with the master Diezel guitar amplifier, Herbert.

I mean, if Sir Peter took the notion to name Peter's finest guitar amplifier creation after his own Father (Herbert), that says it all, IMFO!!! :gethim:

And as Steve pre-qualified his statement, some people will agree, some people won't. I've got to chime in here - ALL Diezels are works of sonic art, but the one amp that has seriously stuck out in the sounds of many, is the V. I know, I know - a plethora of artists USE the Herbster, and hell I'll pick one up just because I can - might as well - but when listening to, say, 25 artists... If some of them were using Herbies, maybe you'd know, maybe you wouldn't - but the cats using V's are 100% noticeable.

Herbert, V. But you can always shoot me a VH4(S) for a backup... :D

As far as a Herbert being somewhat similar to a Rectifier.... not even close sense they are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Tight dynamic clean gain vs. fuzzy saggy gain.

As far as I know, Peter build the Herbert arount the same time as the Uberschall was created.
Just a little competition between Reihold + Peter. For me, it is obvious who wins :D
