Anyone do this or try this?

I wanted to ease up on the sharpness and harshness I was hearing today from an EH 12AX7 that was in my JSX's V2 gain spot. So I put a Sovtek LPS in there and it seemed to do the trick. This particular tube is described as high gain and low noise. I've heard of these being used in various preamp spots in various amps. But not so much in an amps gain spot.
so far I noticed my gain is a bit smoother and a notch less than the EH. The gain also seems to be clearer and with a little less noise.

Does anyone have any more info or experience with this tube? Thanks,

Really nice tube. It's what comes stock in current Bogners, so they have to be decent. They are in the new XTC that I got back in Jan. I think they sound great. Lots of gain and real fat. You can't put them in the cathode follower slots though, as they'll fry.

One of my fave tubes. They do seem to fatten up the sound without taking away too much gain.

isn't this the tube that a lot of people are saying don't put it in a spot that has a cathode follower? I think James Peters was talking about it a while back. And I could be wrong....

Yes, but from what I've read the cathode follower is the preamp spot that handles the effects loop and/or EQ driver. In my amps case that would be the V3 position. I'm using a LPS in the crunch & ultra channel gain position. I'm pretty happy so far with the results. Thanks for the replies,

so how do you find out if a particular amp uses cathode followers or not? I have a few of those tubes here but have never used them for fear of disaster   But now you have me curious about trying them again. I did put a 12ax7m in V1 of my XXX and man what an improvement. That amp freaking sings now.

From what I understand, the cathode follower stage is were the effects loop and EQ spot is located. Although some amps don't have a preamp spot for those two things. I guess the best way to find out is to contact the amp maker or a real knowledgable user of the amp.

Randy, in the Voodoo Plexi the Cathode follower stage is the 2nd preamp tube i think.. thats where it is in most stock old Marshalls

Uh oh. :aww:

I turned my amp on today and.....no sound from either of the two gain channels!! but the clean channel is fine.

So, I pulled out the LPS from the V2 spot and put an EH back in and it's working again.

There's no visual sign of wear or damage to the LPS, so I'm stumped. Oh well, at least everything is running and sounding good.

I had good luck with sovtek's in the two amps i had them in. EH's are shitty IMHO, had issues with them in every amp i had them in. very microphonic sounding(ringing and unexplained noise). soon as they were replaced the problems went away.
