Speaker Outputs and Impedance...

So I bought a Torpedo Captor X to use Live and for recording.

My question is, On my Nitro, if I plug my first speaker output into a cabinet and plug the 2nd speaker output into the Captor X, does the impedance split in half or stay the same ?

Its a 100w model Nitro running in 50watts mode with the 2 outer tubes taken out.

Thanks

I wish I knew more Bash_Man but the first question I would have is does the Captor X provide resistance? In other words, it can handle the ohm resistance that the output transformer is giving? I see it has a Speaker In (8 ohms) so I am assuming it does. The second question is what speaker cabinet and what ohm rating does it have? I'm going to assume your speaker cabinet is 16 ohms. When you run your Nitro at half power, you would then drop the ohms on the back to 8. But I believe, when running two loads like this in parallel, you need to divide back down again so you'd set amp to 4 ohms. But that means the cabinet is getting getting 4 ohms and the Captor X is getting 4 ohms. The amplifiers output transformer can probably handle all of this, I'm just not sure about the Captor.

If you don't get a better answer - I would consider moving this or asking in the Main Forum to get more input. Not too many people in here. :dunno:

Thanks Bud. The Captor X can work as a reactive load, so i dont need a speaker attached to it. Its a 16ohms version.

The cab I am using now is a 16ohms cabinet.

I can daisy chain the head to the captor x and then to the cabinet.. but figured I can just use the 2nd speaker output on the Nitro if its possible.

Thanks

That helps. So your Captor is a 16 ohm version? OK. And you will plug a speaker cable from amp to the red speaker in jack on the Captor X?

Also keep in mind, if you run from one cabinet to another (Captor X) you have a series connection which means you add together instead of dividing in half. So 16 + 16 is 32 ohms.

Do parallel

Also, Scott told me the speaker jack closest to the ohm selector is the primary speaker out FYI. I assume that is true for most amps.

So it is like this one but 16 ohm?

That's my thinking if I was to just use the 2nd speaker output on the Nitro.

So right now my OHMS switch is on 8ohms because I use 50watts mode and 2 outer tubes are out. If I was to use both speaker outputs, I would then switch the OHMS switch to 4 ohms?

Good to know. I'll label them so I dont mistake it.

That's the one.

Using two speaker outs on the amp means the signal is parallel, meaning you divide in half (regardless if already on half power)..

Using one speaker out on the amp to one speaker cab and then daisy chaining off of that one to a second speaker cab means the signal is in series, so you add together.

The Captor X I found on Sweetwater says the Speaker In is 8 ohm. I'm sure they make different flavors, just checking. So again, assuming your speaker cabinet is 16 ohms and your Captor X is 16 ohms and you are running at half power, then you would set your impedance selector on the amp to 4 ohms.

I'd really like someone else to confirm that.

Perfect. Thank you. I am gonna set it up Saturday and see how it sounds.

Hold on. Daisy chaining to another cabinet could be parallel. Most of my cabinets are labeled parallel inputs. I always check with a voltmeter. Hook everything up and the cable that would go into your amp leave out and take a reading. Black on sleeve, red on tip.
The amps 2 jacks are always parallel. So if u take a reading of 2 16ohm cabs the amp will run at 8. I do have older cabs that are 8ohms on 1 jack and 16 on the other. They weren't labeled either. I took measurements and wrote it with white out on the back.
If I remember correctly though those load boxes will not give you any signal because they are active when you try to take a reading you will just get funny numbers. But if it says 16 ohms I would Bank on it being 16 ohms

And yes about the half power. If you are running 16ohm load set your amp to 8 if at half power.
8 ohm cabs set to 4 ohm in amp
4 ohm cabs would be a no go

Scott told me same with the half power switch too. Treat it as if you're pulling tubes.

There's not a big volume difference in half power. Does have a killer tone though.

@morgansbluff many thanks for the reply. I think I'll play it safe and use the 2nd output on the Nitro to plug the Captor X.

I'll let you guys know how it goes on Saturday. 🤘🏻

This explains it. All depends how you have it set
