SPEAKER PREFRENCES

Thanks 3 mile stone and Eric your reply's it do help me.
That was a good info that the pre amp tubes change the feel more than the tone.

I play live at church youth group and adult group -pretty rockin

on my seminar head and GC 4x12 straight the speakers have some fizzyness in it i cant get rid of I gotta fix.
the mod 50 SL EG5 vox slant GC 4x12 it really sounds good

I want to get 2 additionaI 2 x12 cabs with someting different other than the GC v30's to use, for recording, writing etc.
Any suggestions?

Here's what I am looking for.
More vox clean chime, swirl etc so maybe Blue alnico? But how would the seminar or SL sound thru that?
Then maybe the other with k100's? or the k100's replacing the GC v30's or X configuration?
Or greenbacks for the classic rock thing?

I also heard that celestion Stonehedge (they may be discontinued) go 80% both ways when a vox is played it sound alnico blue and when a marshall is played thru it it leans greenback.

using 2 other 2x12 cabs as alternate tones what would you guy's put in them?
I have never heard these other kinds of speakers and am trying to remember recordings of famous bands and speculating
what they were using. my understanding is that Vox tones were mostly the alnico blues and i am pretty confident I know that tone.

thanks

+1 on all that. Changing speakers can be just as drastic as changing amps.

I used to have a Zinky Mofo that I ran w/ a Boogie cab w/ V30s. There was something I never really liked about the sound (especially recorded) and then when I discovered the internet and gear forums, I realized I wasn't alone.

I decided to buy a matching Zinky cab with "custom" drivers in it. While the V30s were OK, the Zinky's were HORRIBLE. Went from sounding Soldano-ish to almost like a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (not my thing).

The zinky 2x12, without batting/dacron/polyfill and wired series will peel paint and feel choked in the mids.

Wire that thang parallel, add 20 oz. of polyfill, and be happy. :)

I use a Rivera 2x12 cabinet that is tough as they come and I swapped out the EV's for a pair of Celestion Sidewinders (S12-150)
great speaker for what I like and they have no midrange dip in response so what you put in is what you hear in the mids
they do have a nice smoothing in the top end
They are also very sensitive - 103dB I thinkso very loud too
Some say they are a bit bass light , but sound great for my classic rock tastes with an 80's twist

I also have a pair of Marshall 1912s with Sidewinders in as well - sound great

The Weber Silver Bell I bought form Eric is just astounding. My favorite speaker by far. It has a little bit of everything going on. It hints at the sqwankiness of an alnico, has some great V30 upper mids that are not nasal but still very cutting in a live band situation and just a hint of Green Back brightness without any low end flubbyness.

Need any more Webers?

1265 8 ohm, sounds warm and awesome

Blue dog cermaic, 8 ohm

Blue Dog Cermaic, 8 ohm

Thanks Gene. I tried they're 65 and didn't care for it.

Considering Blue Dogs, but need 16 ohms. Thinking about two Sliver 16 ohmers for the TM 2x12.

I'd like to try some Celestion Golds someday.

I love the sound of Celestion Blues, and the Golds are supposed to be that
at the 50 w power handling.

Only problem is you could probably pick up a Rebel for the price of two Golds.

Anybody play their rig through these?

My current cabs are a Bogner 4x12 with V30s (for higher-gain sounds, as well as some clean sounds where I want a punchy low end) and an open-back Avatar 1x12 with a Celestion Gold that I picked up at a great price on eBay (which I use for all other sounds - especially for the vox module!!). I have another cab (from my 65 Amps London 18) with a Celestion Blue that stays in my studio - I agree that the Gold is very close but is just that much more flexible for general usage (since it has more headroom/takes higher wattage).

As for those who complain about the midrange spike of V30s, all I will say to my fellow guitar players in search of tone is that after 20 years playing in everything from metal bands to soukous/african groups to classic pop/rock cover bands, and recording an even broader range of music: MIDRANGE IS YOUR FRIEND, and midrange is where the electric guitar should live - on stage or in the studio. Scooped EQ is for bass players (and bedroom wankers)!! :-)

I like mid-range like the rest of us...but V30s for me are just too fizzy and such. I much prefer the midrange of a CL80 vs a V30. Plus V30s don't have the high end sparkle I want either.

Eric

Since we're on the topic here, I was wondering what any of you guys thought about a V30 / CL80 combo. I have a Gerlitz Revelator 2x12 combo that came with these, and I always loved the sound from the amp. It's in no way a high gain amp though. I was wondering if this might be a good combo for my Mod series 2x12 cabinet. My main modules are the T/D (which I would love to switch out for a VX), the COD, and the EG5.

Well I'd have to actually like V30s enough to try it!!! hahahhaah j/k. It'd be decent, but probably would have that annoying "fizz" and upper midrange bark I can't stand.

Maybe I'll try it anyway. Nothing lost at this point but time anyway. ;) The gerlitz always liked the V30 speaker better anyway. Maybe it will love two of them.

Who has EV speakers? Do they have a cleaner, less break up sound? where they are more neutral and you get more of the amps sound and less speaker sound? We had EV PA speakers many moons ago for our small gigs outside for parties of 200-500 people. They sounded great but I never tried them just for guitar.

I currently have

EV 1x12

Boogie 2x12 halfback w75 & greenies

Bogner 4x12 w/ gh30, 75, greenie, v30 (used to be uberkab)

My pov
75s
need lots of lows to soak up for them to bounce
Bright peaky scoopy speaker which helps counteract eggie round midrange
Rock speaker that pairs well with v30

V30
Fat single notes for rock-fusiony tones
Weird gritty sharp high mid peak that changes character with different enclosures
Sounds smoother than 75 and sounds great with *bogner* cubes and open back 1x12 cabs

Gh30
Smooth round midrange-not much bass
When cranked breaks up with some nice presence
Rely on cab resonance for fullness on low end

Greenback
Great lynch/dimartini honk ala "you're in love" / "just got lucky"
Aggresive crunch and presence and a little boomy low end

EV
Very flat top end compared to celestion
Tight low/honest linear mids
Smooths out upper mids/Chime killer

I'm using the ev 1-12 and the boogie 2-12
