Starting point for DSL40CR and Fractal FM3 80s Metal Settings?

What are your guy’s thought on the mxr 5150 overdrive pedal? Been thinking about checking out one of those. Wondering if it works well through clean channel or used as a preamp through the dsl40 power amp. Or would you say the amp’s gain channel is better?

Sounds good enough on it's own IMO.. especially from this vid below. Honestly, this is some of the best tone I've ever heard.. may have to get one of these now that they are discounted.

I’m kind of done with the dsl. Idk why ppl say it sounds good. Sounds like boxy, cardboard shit to me personally. I never hear that tasty tone I’m looking for. Think I want to trade it for something that sounds a bit better out of the box

I think the DSL sounds good tbh, but I've never used a combo version, and also never heard/played the speaker you use in your combo

I would probably run a creamback or a scumback or something like that in it

I'm mad I never bought that DSL40C/Creamback package deal Sweetwater was offering about 8 years ago. This was back when they were around $600 new with this speaker.

On a different note, I can't believe these wouldn't sound good as I have a Katana 100 MKII and it sounds fantastic. I would image the DSL would sound even better with tubes. I am pretty good at dialing in tones though. If I didn't like it I'd just connect it too my 4x12. I've heard the 40's sound sweeter than the 100 through the same cab and feel better under the fingers.. and the 40s are actually 50 watts.

I'm not a katana fan at all so we probably have pretty different ideas of tones we go for

I've never noticed a huge difference in tone between the 40/50/100 watts for DSLs, there is a big difference between jcm2000 and modern DSLs though.

Shit, if sweetwater had that package deal now i'd totally snag one.

It sounds like you have a ton of problems dialing in your dsl combo though, and I can't help but wonder if its because you run a less common speaker than what people typically run in them? They aren't the sexiest choice on earth, but the dsl is well loved specifically because its kind of a plug and play type of option - a relatively inexpensive amp you can get sounding good with minimal effort.

Warehouse makes great speakers and lots of people swear by them. I've played a handful over the years. I'm not saying that its a shit speaker or anything, but perhaps its just the wrong fit for what you want your DSL to do?

I don't have a DSL.. you must have me confused with the OP :p

If it's not for you, it's not for you. Personally, the clip I shared on page one works for me. We didn't even mic the combos and it carried the room. I'll grab these combos all day long for under $500. But you do have to change the speaker, that may be what you don't like? I use a CB65 and my son uses a neo creamback.

I've been blown away by the Katana.. I can dial things in pretty good but just bought these presets last week and am amazed with the tones. This little amp really has some punch, kick, thump and authority if you dial it in. Does Marshall tones well.

I get some pretty big differences running my FM9 into different returns. Sounds pretty good into the 5153 return without tweaking anything further than you normally would, but into my Electra Dyne there’s a LOT of excess bass and treble depending on the volume and the amount of tweaking I had to do to make it ‘normal’ sounding made it not worth it for me.

When I mean ‘amount of tweaking’, I mean Poweramp/Cab sims off, just using the Tone and Output EQ pages. I really try getting any Fractal tones I dial in with just the normal amp controls without relying on the additional EQ (unless it’s a Mark amp and I need the 5-band).

I had such varying results at different volumes with that, that this week I went from wanting a JPIIC+ to use the FM9 in 4CM, to just wanting a 2:90 to run the FM9 into, then back to the JPII plan.
