Studio Pre is a 2C+

IMO, the quad pre-amp is a much better unit. Also, I prefer the 50/50 power amp over all the other Mesa power amps.
 
There are more changes required than what he points out... Also, the schematic he is using for the IIC+ isn't official. It's a fan drawn one by jrb32. They are indeed quite close, though. And as far as why you'd choose the amp over the preamp + poweramp, well... That is the age old question ever since the dawn of 80s rack preamp days, is it not? There are differences when the power supplies are decoupled like that.
 
Idk but they are pretty cool preamps for sure. I had one briefly but felt it's high gain sound was too close to my D60 so I flipped it. Wish I still had it because the price has shot up a lot since then
 
I can confirm that they are not the same. I had a studio preamp that was modded to IIC+ specs years ago. Even that sounded like shit.
 
It very well may be, but it doesn't sound anywhere close to the same without a TON of tweaking and EQ :dunno:
 
The recto and slo have near identical preamps and sound pretty different. It would be interesting to hear a studio through a iic power section though.
