Some of the shit people come up with, and/or regurgitate baffles me..

"Feels good under the fingers"?? WTF? How does an amp feel good under your fingers? A guitar, maybe, but an amp?

"Complex midrange"?? How do mids get complex? They're either there, or not. Are they so complex, they're indescribable?

"CHEWY"? Like Chewbacca?

Anybody else have some goodies that make you scratch your head?

A couple I've seen on TGP:

Toasted wheat
Boating at sunset

Yes, most do derive from TGP. Like the guy looking for Hot Fudge with Nuts.

And, there's always a Crema Wheat for sale, or Creme Brule.

I've always struggled with naming what I hear. Example, would be what I would term as "squishy".. Which I think most would call natural compression in an amp, or maybe sag. Heck, I don't know. LOL

Squishy to me is kinda like wooly.. I personally equate that to low end. Spongy? Certainly not tight.

"woody" is one i never understood, like do you get wood when playing the thing?

I thought woody meant like "complex/organic midrange," but I've heard so many tgpers describe so much shit as woody I have no idea anymore

I get woody thinking about chewy tight goodness.

Good thread.

@Racerxrated and I were discussing cold vs warm tone one day but now I can't even remember the context. Was that bias?

Edit: Boating at sunset is dangerous, or should I say, will be shortly.

Squishy makes sense, I agree it describes pretty accurately the sound and response of a lot of power tube compression.

“Woody” has never made any sense to me and I’ve never seen anyone actually explain it coherently.

Yep we were. Warm tends to be dark by my reading others posts..when I think of warm I think of midrange heavy which can be bright.
As far as feel goes, if you don’t understand the feel difference between amps, I feel bad for some of you since you’ve never experienced an amp where the feel is far different than any other amp. And it’s the amp, not the guitar. Playing a C+, Naylor, Wizard or a vintage Fender/Marshall there’s just a huge difference in how the guitar feels to play; vs a 6505, EVH, Splawn, Runt, Diavlo or any of the same 5 amps that the OP seems to rotate through every 6 months. Lol
As far as the other descriptions, maybe it’s easier to say “yeah I’ve played one. Sounds like shit compared to my Larry or Marshall or etc”. Instead of using descriptions that seem to confuse some of you. 😂

It reminds me of the dumb shit they try to come up with to describe wines and now even things like beer and whiskey. I’ve seen shit like “notes of horse blanket” and “a bouquet of loamy earth”

You should read the descriptions of flower, (bud) on the dispensary websites. I have a Marijuana card, (heehee).. It's pretty funny what they come up with.

yeah "organic" is another one i have no clue about

This is my best guess:

Contrast with "sterile." Neither is really better or worse, they're just different sounds.

Think of it as a scale, with SS like Randall or a jc120 at the most sterile, and a 59 fender bassman or a overdrive special as the most "organic."

What people are really talking about is the way the overdrive behaves - in general "organic" amps seem to be less grainy and more flubby as they overdrive, and more "sterile" amps are generally grainier and more tight, surgical.
