Is the hefty price tag worth the custom shop ? How’s the build quality vs the us / Japan production if any I’m in the market so want to get some opinions before taking the plunge ,

Thanks y”all

I have a MIJ and IMHO the difference is in the wood quality, not the build quality. Go USA for better wood choices all around - at least IMO.

This one is strange. 3 years ago you could get a usa rr1 or SL2H for $1200. Now they are 3-5k!

I have an rr1 and sl2h and got rid of both for ltd guitars of similar shapes. Seems crazy but I did. Never could bond with the jacksons.

Never had an early 90's MIJ Professional Pro, I've heard they are similar to the USA models of the day. Had a Dinky Rev MIJ Professional (lower-mid tier), an '06 RR1 and a Custom Shop Dinky (2013 I think).

The MIJ Dinky was great but a USA or Custom Shop model are gonna be several cuts above with the Custom Shop at the pinnacle.

Wish I still had the RR1, those guitars are pretty much perfect.

A good LTD are great guitars. They're the 5150 III's of the guitar world.

I have a 1997 MIJ Dinky, I love it. Plays awesome, fit and finish is killer. Might upgrade to an OG Floyd here soon but so far, haven't felt the need to. The prices have jumped on them dramatically as of recent but you can still find a deal if you stay vigilant.

I love my custom jackson. But I am a picky fucker. If you can find a lower model that has your feature set, and then do a few upgrades, that can be a great guitar. I had a pro series that was one of the best guitars i ever played, tbh. When I was waiting for my custom to be made, I thought maybe I shouldn't have ordered it, cuz it is a bit of money, but when it was done and they sent me this picture, I was like....I have to have it. When I played it, It was fucking electric.

If you're looking at the older MIJ stuff, the ones to have are the Professional series guitars that still had the MOP Jackson logos. There is virtually no difference in those vs. the USA models of the time. That's why they quit selling those, and then you start seeing the Professional models with the silkscreen logos come out after that with cheaper appointments like rosewood boards, plastic back covers, etc.. The older MOP logoed Jackson Soloists had ebony boards, real MOP sharks, aluminum back plate covers, etc.. Just like the USA line of guitars. At one point, I had both a USA and MIJ Soloist to compare them side by side, and the only thing I could see were slight differences to the headstock edges. The MIJ guitar was slightly angled, where the USA was flat. But other than that, I could see no visual difference. I can't speak to the woods used though, with regard to if they used a higher quality of wood, etc.

Here is my take:

Don’t buy a “custom shop” thinking it is a higher quality/trim level. A Custom Select is the same trim level/quality as a Select. Only difference, you get to choose the options on a Custom Select where a Select is a stock configuration.

Masterbuilt is a different deal. They are not taking Masterbuilt orders from the general public, so at the moment talking USA “custom shop” versus USA production is a conversation of Custom Select vs Select.

The main reason to go Custom Select “custom shop” IMO, is to configure the instrument exactly the way you want it.

IMO to pay new custom select prices for a model that a dealer spec’d and listed defies the idea behind getting a “custom shop” instrument that is crafted to your personal preferences. You are really paying about a $1,000 premium to get the “Custom Shop” logo at that point.

Masterbuilts are pretty exquisite, for the foreseeable future you are only going to get them used, as a NAMM guitar, or as special runs from the big Jackson dealers who have the influence (and build slots) with Jackson to make it happen.

Production Select vs MIJ, my experience is that the difference is in wood quality and the USA instruments have a slightly better fit/finish/attention to detail (e.g. the cavities and routes on my USAs look like furniture quality woodworking… especially my Custom Selects, the MIJs are no slouch either but the details are a notch higher on the USAs). Only you can decide if that is important to you.

Now this is what I will tell you: I put in an order for a Custom Select Soloist in August 2020. The delivery estimate was 18-24 months. In August 2021my dealer checked the order status and was told we were still “still at least 24 months out”. I said “fuck that shit” and cancelled the order and got a full refund.

So at this point you realistically have four options (unless you want to wait 24+ months to get your guitar: a used Masterbuilt, a dealer spec’d or used Custom Select, a USA Select (used or new), or MIJ (used or new).

In my experience a used Custom Select can offer a good value. People will mark them up and try to sell based on the custom shop badge, but they are harder to sell. They are one offs or part of a spot run. It is harder to sell unique and hard to verify instruments. So with some wily negotiating I have seen people get used Custom Selects cheaper than used Selects… but you have to work the deal.

Sellers try to blur the line on guitars with a “Custom Shop” badge. There is a big difference between a Master Built and a Custom Select. Some sellers are more than happy to let you believe a Custom Select “custom shop” is a true Masterbuilt Custom Shop. Badged guitars should have a COA and that is the easiest way to tell what a “custom shop” Jackson is. It will state “Masterbuilt” or “Custom Select” on the COA.

At this point, I am down to 3 Masterbuilts, 2 Custom Selects, 1 USA Select, and 2 MIJs.

I love this thread because I am rooting for you to get a custom select. But I will be happy with you getting a good x series or pro series, too. I have never played a bad jackson guitar. GG4221 makes some excellent points. If you have patience, and really want a guitar with your feature set, I say go for it. But since this is a forum, and we love guitar porn, what feature sets are you going for?

@Smashedguitarist, here is some guitar porn for you. Materbuilt hardtail Soloist with BK Ragnarocks in Platinum Pink:

Reaching into my collectibles, here is a NAMM Masterbuilt Charvel Star that was hand Flamed by Mike Eldred. It was the first Charvel produced with a licensed Fender headstock and was one of the two prototypes presented to Fender for licensing approval. This guitar was inadvertently unveiled at NAMM by DimeBags old lady a year before it was supposed to officially exist.

The pink Soloist is unreal. The clearcoat is Spar Eurethane instead of Poly. Because of this the neck doesn’t get sticky like poly coated necks can.

Plays fantastic and the Ragnaroks can rip your head off!

My #1 is the White Dinky. The thin, oil finished neck is my favorite.

Glad I got this custom shop when I did, a long time ago. Even the regular USAs used are too rich for my blood these days.
