The Rhythm sound on Facelift was a boosted Blackface Bassman; Butler Tube Driver. Out of R Champagnes mouth; here on the forum. Snorkeler was leads n cleans.
Through 70s greenbacks.
No need to blow 6K on a Bogner modded Marshall.
Reviving this to add my 2c.
I've read about this Bassman thing a number of times but this is Ronnie directly quoted:
• we used a 4x12 with greenbacks in a stairwell all knobs on ten for solos...but we also used it (the Snorkler) in various settings for a multitude of overdubs
• as a side note i also used a R.K.Butler TubeDriver pre amp into a vintage Fender Bassman for many of the 'mellower' tones
I think it's fair to assume the crushing grind we all know and love on We Die Young, Put You Down etc is the Snorkler.
what’s the story morning glory?
Except, our own New World Man(Jack) asked Ronnie in a PM directly about this. His first post doesn't state "mellower" tones. That must be a later edit. I'll see if I can find it.Reviving this to add my 2c.

Ok interesting. I do have a blackface Bassman but never got it anywhere near those tones. I gotta push it harder or write better riffs!Except, our own New World Man(Jack) asked Ronnie in a PM directly about this. His first post doesn't state "mellower" tones. That must be a later edit. But in the PM that Ronnie sent back to Jack, he states that the Snorkler was used for leads and some cleans. The majority of the heavy rhythm was the Chandler (modded) tube driver into the slightly modded blackface Bassman. Through that old GB cab that they had set up in a stairwell lol.
If you've ever owned or played a 60s Bassman, or even a 70s version you hear that low mid growl that they come with stock. Very easy to hear how Facelift tone can be gotten from a boosted Bassman.
But, to throw another wrench into this, take a listen to the We Die Young demo tone...that was Jerry's trusty RG100 stack that he used until they broke big. Sounds eerily like Facelift. I'll see if I can find that...it's out there on Youtube though.
Jerry's really big on blending amps in the studio.what’s the story morning glory?
The last one I had was a '66, and with a couple boosts and darkening the amp eq, but boosting the mids on the pedals it had a similar growl through my 72 GB cab. Not exact, but close enough to hear how that combo could easily get you close. But when you find that demo, and realize it was a Randall RG that kinda blows everything else out of the water lol. Jerry can dial that tone in with many amps I'd guess.Ok interesting. I do have a blackface Bassman but never got it anywhere near those tones. I gotta push it harder or write better riffs!
when you find that demo
Yeah, it's amazing how Jerry had it all worked out before they ever went into the studio !Yep that's the one...sounds damn close to the Facelift version; and this was his trusty RG stack.
Yep... it's his RG80ES from what I have read. You see the RG80 on stage at alot of shows even after the album release, at the album release party it was the Randall.Yep that's the one...sounds damn close to the Facelift version; and this was his trusty RG stack.
