Tell me about the Soldano SLO 30.. Good for more than 80's? Thrash?

I think the bottom end can get a bit loose and tubby for high gain.. at least with my 2x12..... but the simple, little sd-1 brings some magic for sure. And I'm not saying it's a flabby low end... I actually love it stock... but to get the razors edge.... it does need that push. What's great.... is with 2 pedals... I cover everything from Blue Oyster Cult to 3 Doors Down to Alice and Sevendust.
Absolutely have to boost it to get the tight/sharp attach I like, but that's the same for any amp for me. Only two amps that offer that straight in that I've owned were the Gower and Savage120. Both those amps actually didn't sound good boosted, but straight in were the tightest/fastest attack I've had to date.

Told you both...LOL! I had a Gower 2203x, Fryette CLX and D60, and a 2555x here next to the SLO30, and they're all gone. It's just a killer amp IMHO. Tone, punch, grind, heft, and the feel is great.
Yep, it punches pretty hard, grinds, and is just plain awesome!

What version SD-1 you guys use? Any goes?
I am thinking to buy my first boost and basically my first pedal overall for the SLO-100, and thinking what to get. Sadly missed Griff’s Klon clone run, some complications with paypal.
I just have the OG, (well, current production), $49 special... I also have an MXR Custom Badass, MXR GT-OD, Zakk Wylde OD, Airis Effects Savage Drive, and Fortin TS-9. The SD-1 wins.. It's the perfect pairing with the SLO since that grit it has balances the big fat fullness and low end. Tightens it beautifully.

I’m stoked for you dude! Glad you’re digging it.
I love the SLO’s…my opine is based only on having used plugins and Captures and the mini SLO….but sooo good.

Yup SD1 into SLO is a winner for me on both channels. The crunch gets super tight, while into the overdrive channel I get a little more grease and low end. I'm not sure which way I prefer to be honest... some of the songs my cover band plays really need a clean, and I'm not good enough yet with rolling the volume back to clean things up. I did get a $40 Joyo American Sound pedal to run in my RJM and bypass the SLO preamp, which sounds pretty good, but I'm not sold on it yet. Once you get to 4 on the master, it starts really getting fun.

Sometimes I want to sell off the rest of my amps and just get a 100... probably would save me a lot of money in the long run.

Happy to see all the good reviews here! I bought a SLO 100 off a member here and couldn't be happier. I was a little leery as people either love it or shit on it. For the life of me I can't see why anyone would say it's terrible. I understand "its not my favorite" or "I prefer others" but don't get the outright animosity it seems to instill in some people. It certainly delivers what it's supposed to! Its gain tones are great as is the crunch. Cleans are also totally usable as opposed to a Stealth for example. Maybe it's the price that pisses people off but that doesn't seem to apply to the Wizards, Camerons, unobtanium Mesas.

Thanks for the detailed answer!

I was wondering are older SD-1 different, or just buy any year and ready to go?

I wouldn't discriminate. Just grab a cheap one.
Yep. From everything I've read, there are subtle differences in versions, but not enough to purposely seek a particular one out. I will say that my second favorite boost for the SLO30 is the Buxom Boost. But the SD-1 is the first choice.

Yeah, I just bought a current version for like $50 several months ago..

Definitely considering a new slo 30. Really like that purple head and 1x12 cab
Killer amp but the 1x12 won't do it much justice. I used mine through a Mesa Widebody 112 and a Bogner 112 and it was ok. It sounds awesome with the Soldano Vertical 212.

I've owned a ton, I mean a ton of amps, and the SLO30 has made it to top 5, maybe 3. I had a newer SLO100 right here and preferred the SLO30. Such a great amp and honestly haven't even experimented other than using it in a metal context. I'm sure it's got some killer classic rock, hard rock, hair metal in it.

What cabs/speakers are you running these through?
Played it extensively through my Fryette FB412 w/ F90s, Freyette D412 w/ P50e or whatever, EVH 412 with greenbacks, Whitebox 212 K100s. Sounds tits through all, but the best to my ears is K100 212 on top the EVH412. That's been my go to cab/speaker combo for 8-9 years running.

My SLO 100 sounded great through a P50
D-4x12, i also liked it with my uberkab, so i think the SLO 30 would also sound great through those cabs. I dont think i ever tried it thru my k100 cab.

Yeah I prefer the 30 to the100 by a wide margin. Just such a meaty, texted, harmonically rich tone and when boosted, mean as a dog shittin tacks. Now of course the headroom isn't even comparable, but I don't play out let alone stadiums, so tone wise much prefer the 30.

I played the 30 a couple times and thought it was a great amp, but i didnt get the chance to boost the 30, i loved my 100 boosted. I will eventually get the 30, i have a few amps i dont really play anymore that i might sell.
