Not too familiar with As I Lay Dying, but the first thing that came to mind when listening to the clip was Bullet For My Valentine. And in my book, that's some good eatin'.
Yes, the high-end is the biggest trouble area I have right now. I don't know if it's inherent to the way I play, to the amp model I'm using on the HX, or to the HX platform in general, but I think I need a very surgical cut somewhere around the high-mids or lower treble. But I've avoided it so far because I don't want to loose the airy presence I got going. The original has a very active top-end like really high up. I'm not sure if that is inherent to the mastering on the track or to the preamps Andy Sneap was using. But I'll try to look for that frequency, thanks!
Also, as far as MBC, I agree. That's another thing I've avoided, but I feel it's causing me trouble. There is a certain low mid stuffiness on mine that's not quite right with the original.

I think most people aim for the As Daylight Dies or The End of Heartache tone. And I love those, but my favorite is Shadows Are Security because it almost sounds like something that would've sounded right at home on either an old In Flames or a newer At the Gates record.
