The Egnater info session at NYC Guitar Center was great!

Bruce also explained who the Renegade doesn't have a silent record mode, but the Rebel does. The rebel has a built in dummy-load for the speaker for the silent mode. And in an amp under 30 watts, the load-unit can be small enough and light enough to fit inside an amp.

For the Renegade 65, you'd have to have a load-unit that can handle 100 watts or so, and it would be too big and heavy to be built into the amp.

In the Q & A session, I asked Bruce "hey bruce, the direct XLR out sounds so good on the Renegade, why not make a stand-alone direct record XLR box, because there's not alot of units out there for that purpose. There's the Behringer box that's $50 bucks, and then the Palmer PDI for $600 or more..."

His reply "Um, sure!!!!" He said they're actually working on a stand-alone Direct recording all-in-one-unit that will have a built in load (which equals silent recording!!!) and the XLR cabinet voiced out, etc etc.

The story behind the tube-mix knob was very interesting.

Basically, in the early version of the Rebel, they had a switch to go back and forth between 6V6 and EL84. Well, they were pretty far along in production, and John Ewing discovered that Mesa already had a patent on the switch.

So they had to think of something new, and figure out another way to accomplish their goal.

So they found a way to use a pot, to pan back and forth between the tubes instead. (Which Bruce said is a pretty complicated design, something like a 4-gang pot)

I just think that this is perhaps one of the greatest examples or turning lemons into lemonade, and taking a bad situation and making it great. Because of someone else's patent, they had to figure out a workaround, create something new, and in turn, created something better than originally planned.

Armageddon: Bruce also leaked some new info about Egnater's first exclusively "metal" amp, the Armageddon. He didnt' say much about it, other than people have said that Egnater's can't do metal, and this amp is specifically designed to do metal. My guess is that it's going to have even more gain than the tourmaster/renegade, and be heavy as hell sounding.

Sounds awesome. I just hope they change the name before production.

I dig it too!! Hey Bruce / Jeff. If you need someone to "beta test" that amp..let me know. I wanna hear Egnater deliver the broootalz!!! :)

Nah. It's too "Metal Zone" in nature.

And ya know what? Bruce and Jeff should send one to me for Beta testing. After all, we know Eric isn't going to find anything wrong with it. ;)

Then when it's perfect, they can make a module version of it.

Me not find anything wrong with it? That's just wrong in your thinking!! :) I'm the guy that probably has had my modules modded the most! :) (Much to the shagrin of Bruce / Jeff I know).

Exactly! You're the guy we send it to when everything is working. You're the tweaker. I'm the guy who yells at the designer and says "It doesn't friggin' work yet!". I'm an Italian/American born and raised in Queens, NY. You give that job to me. :D

Ahahahaha ;) That's funny. I'm pretty good at telling the engineers I work with that it doesn't work though!! :) After being blatantly blasted by a customer ;)

Hey guys - just thought I'd jump in here... To further clarify what Bruce has already posted --Premier Guitar is not affiliated with GC, Egnater, or any of the manufacturering/retail companies that are out there in the guitar universe. We're a very different magazine. We review what we think is cool and we don't waste our time reviewing stuff that isn't pretty darn good. A number of companies advertise with us but we have a strict divide between sales and editorial. Not to get off on a tangent, but it's important to note that a lot of savvy guys in the industry write columns for us, but we pay them to do so while fully disclosing who they are and requiring them not to pimp their own wares but to share general gear knowledge instead. We get a lot of questions about the way we roll (and see/hear a lot of false assumptions) because quite frankly, no one has ever run a guitar magazine like this before. We put the entire mag online for free. Our weekly email newsletter, Backstage Pass, has NO ADVERTISING in it. We do lots of things that break the mold of guitar mag publishing. Our only business association with another company other than our own is with Hal Leonard--we're teaming up with them to publish Guitar Edge magazine.

I'm a gear nut just like the rest of you. My staff is made up of gear nuts. My stable of freelancers is made up of gear nuts. Like you, we play a lot of different equipment and go to a lot of concerts. We play a lot of gigs. We spend a lot of time in forums. We have G.A.S. and we do everything we can to learn as much as we can about gear and share what we've learned. We tour factories, we attend workshops, we go and hang out at guitar shows, etc. We're basically just like you but tend to do more of this stuff because this is our job. Yes, I know that I'm a lucky dude. I've had some sh** jobs, let me tell ya... this gig rules.

Bruce asked me to moderate the evening's discussion because we are friends and he knew I'd jump at the chance to hang and spread the word about the mag. I have attended his amp building seminar and am familiar with his stuff because we've reviewed much of it here at Premier Guitar. I'm friends with a number of different guys from a number of different companies and, schedule permitting, will jump at the chance to facilitate a gear discussion at their events, too. This is what people in the media do! Remember, this is a fairly small industry, too -- if you simply go to the NY or LA Amp Shows you too can meet many of the guys who are out there building great amps... you don't have to work for a magazine. These are normal dudes (well, mostly normal ;) ) who are looking for feedback on their stuff. In fact, some guys at Bruce's thing the other night had some great feedback that he seemed poised to do something with. That's what it's all about!

Anyway, just chiming in to clarify. Thanks for the props that were dropped and if anyone has a suggestion for the mag, hit me... joe@premierguitar.com Questions, criticism, etc... let 'er rip because that's how we're making the mag better. Going back to lurking now...

Joe: Welcome. Good luck with PG, man! Sounds refreshing in the world of guitar media as we know it.

Wow, it's funny what one question from an uninformed hack will do sometimes.

:D ;)

edited for content.

Joe:

Love you NOT to lurk! You'd be a valuable resource here. We'd love you to be a contributor to the forum, as we are a bunch of gear nuts! But I know you are busy though too.

Thanks for a great magazine, and being a cool guy! Look forward to meeting you at NAMM.

Eric
