Link, please.
Dude, I just gave you two links, 1 from both Chuck's former bandmate Kam Lee spilling the beans, and from Jeff Becerra's interview, where it also said that the Possessed songs were written in '82/'83.

Oh, a quote from YOUR link:
By the dawn of the Eighties he (=Chuck S.) had discovered the underground tape-trading circuit and the unbridled brutality of Venom, Metallica, Slayer, Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost, Possessed and more.

So, yeah, semantics. :sneaky:

EDIT: besides, we're talking about two different things. I never claimed that Possessed was the 1st death metal band. I said they were the kickstarter of the death/thrash subgenre, and you said in post #54 "Possessed wasn't even the first death metal band."
Wasn't arguing that. Peace.

Possessed wasn't even the first death metal band. That would be Chuck Schuldiner's Mantas. which was formed in 1983, and was well know in underground music tape trading circles.

Don't get me wrong, but I would not put any of the Demolition Hammer and Morbid Saint in the same league as Slayer. On the writing credits though, you're absolutely right. Hanneman was definitely the more prolific writer.

PS: There's a lot of overlap in death metal and thrash. What I meant is that Slayer are the first ones that did it right.
Slayer is Death Metal? Uhhhhhh. OK.

Slayer always called themselves a riff and hook punk-thrash band.

I've never thought they fit into any sub-genre very neatly.
Hell Awaits and RIB are the only of their classic 80s/early 90s albums that "mostly" fit well into the speed-metal/thrash club.
SNM, SOH, SITA, and DI all have many other elements going on. There is some doom and gloom, melodic stuff, dark catchy slamming breakdowns ect..

I don't know if Kam Lee is a reliable source. Here he is walking back that interview:

Jeff seems more reliable, and I am a fan of his band, but I'd need more sources.

I wasn't arguing about the first death metal band either, if anyone cares to check. I was talking about how Divine Intervention was the perfect death/thrash crossover album. It's just an opinion.

I've met Kerry. I've hung out and drank with Kerry on several occasions, get a camera or microphone out of that dudes face, and he's one of the coolest, most chill people I've come across. Always enjoyed getting to hang with him and Gary.
Now that I like to hear. Good deal bro, you just changed decades of mild dislike that I have had for him…
