Yep, another video on THAT topic, this time from Jacob Deraps and damn, it's great. He's nailed that sound.

To the "Find your own sound" and "Another thread on this topic?" folks, some of us love that sound and no one's gonna make you watch the video. LOL.

To be fair, his starting riff sounded a bit too grainy/raspy and the flanger was a tad on the too chorussy side of things. Almost like an Ibanez flanger opposed to an MXR.
The original's base tone is ever so slightly less hairy, more bouncy/syruppy and the flanger has more typical jet flangy swoosh... Listen to the difference (on good headphones) and focus purely on the flanger:

But overall yeah, it's really close. It's just that this is such a quintessential tone, that most of us know it by heart.

My vintage (pre-Dunlop) MXR Micro Flanger gets the EVH tone closer IMO.
And aside from the Blue Box (I'm not paying $600 for those block letters with box in Japan), I have 'em all & original. :cool:

Dude can play.
That he can and even if you only got maybe 70-80% of the tone down, actually being able to play properly in the EVH style (that specific swing in "I'm the One" for instance) will truly help sell it more, than some guy who's got all the right gear (mystery pots on the back of amp and all :ROFLMAO: ), but plays it half-assed.

I know a 'local' guy who's a great player in a VH tribute and he does the EVH stuff on a Marshall JVM. His playing skill just helps to sell it.

My own 'EVH' signal chain to somewhat mimic the tone isn't true to the original either;
Charvel So-Cal ProMod MIJ (alder body, maple neck (now THIS is important! MAPLE FUCKIN' NECK!!!), Super Distortion bridge, brass block under Floyd-->MXR Phase 95-->MXR Micro Flanger (vintage)-->DOD 250 (modded, for boost)-->Engl Savage 60 mkI into Marshall 1966B (Mesa V30+'85 vented T75). FX-Loop: TC Alter Ego V2 set to Space Echo, TC HOF Mini Reverb with plate patch.
But for a little at home jammin', it gets it done.

The pickup in the EVH Frankie he’s using is the EVH Wolfgang pickup which comes stock on that guitar. Hes getting a great Van Halen 1 sound

Obviously it’s not going to sound exactly like VH 1. The fact that he gets this close plugged straight into a new production plexi into an OX load box/ir and a reverb plugin proves to any reasonable person that Eddie didn’t use some secret voodoo modded plexi. Sure the variac and echoplex add something. A very very small something. I have both. It’s very subtle.

The original tone is what you are hearing after it goes through a console and is mixed using a Pultec among other things. It could also be the difference in component drift. It's ok to admit it.., he's pretty bang on here and essentially saying what we all know. Plexi dimed, greenbacks, hot pup, hands. :D ( Maybe an EQ) I agree with you that his Flanger is different. But that's not the focusof his clip.

What have you done to your DOD 250 to make it a boost? I always find the 250 circuit to feel like a very natural extension of the amp. I also like the sound of the vintage flanger, less pronounced, smoother.

President Trump needs to sign an executive order banning all EVH videos, threads, and discussions until we can figure out why this shit is still going on and why anybody still cares.

The American people have had enough! View attachment 385745
He’s so out of it he thought he was signing an order to stop video and or photo’s of when he shit’s his pants.
