thinking about another Mod 50?!

Hi everyone!

I sold my Mod 50 a few years ago but I miss some things about it. I loved having the ability to bring an.Erect to a gig one night and an SL2 the next. I have a 20th Bogner Shiva and PWE Event Horizon and I have been craving a Rectoverb, Electradyne and Mark V. So, I keep thinking Mod may be calling me again. I would also grab a Line 6 M9 for effects since my effects are all analog instrument level. So, the Mod 50 and M9 could be an alternate rig. One problem I had before was I had an Ear Candy cab that sounded congested and ruined it for me. I know my Stone Age and Bogner cabs will sound good with the Mod 50. I would stick to modules that don't sound a lot like my Shiva or PWE. What do ya think?
Give it another try or stick to plan A, which is a Mark V or Electradyne, etc. ;)

One theng though. The Mod 50 can use Randall modules, right? I have really started using less channels and my friend Rob, Jaded Faith created custom modules. He is very talented.

How is Egnater support these days?

Come on guys, welcome me back, I am coming back.....

LOL there aren't many modular guys around anymore. This place is now more or less a haven for GC line troubleshooting. Once they revamp the line in a year or so, I suspect people will get back into it.

Yes the Mod 50 can use Randall stuff.

I'd go MOD50 over a Mesa Mark V every day of the week.

The Mesa has WAY TOO MUCH GOING ON. Kind of like dialing this in:

In contrast, the MOD50 is like this:

Simple and effective!

Glad your back ;) I love my Jaded Faith modules with my MOD50 but I also run an RM4 in the loop to have even more channels! Although, for gigging, I'd probably just bring out the MOD50 with the appropriate modules. I use a Axess GRX4 switcher to toggle between the MOD50 preamp and the RM4. FWIW, I still love the Bman and EG3/4.

Modular is alive and well on the grailtone forums. It also seems like there are plenty of new users as well...And a few of the long time MTS guys have gone dual modular now that the modders are offering their works to that format.

Someone needs to buy Bruce's original MOD100 though! I wish I could :aww:

Might not be a good idea for me to get one if they don't hold value. Seems nobody wants them! And I recall the buttons on mine broke often. My Bogner 20th Shiva and PWE Event Horizon are built much better.

These days I prefer less channels not more...in fact...right now my dream amp is a single channel monster where I can do it all with the volume knob!

Maybe this was a bad idea, LOL.

If you are going to get one I would recommend doing it now. I am glad that I got in early when this stuff was assembled in house, right before the GC line started. I assure you I never would have made the purchase if it were mass produced.

Used value has held steady on the Mod 50's and has actually improved a bit on the modules. At the peak of popularity, it wasn't uncommon to see dual modules going for $275 and Egnater singles for $125. It was a real crapshoot back then to get a module that was unmolested, which is why I put the brakes on the module acquisitions. Especially the Randall stuff. Almost every Randall I purchased was altered and made no mention of modification in the ad.

You've been down this road before, so it's not like you have to take a gamble. I've continued to use my M4 for over 3 years and haven't had any issues at all.

My other guitarist is a pedal guy and plays thru an AC30 (he also uses a Tweaker). I understand the whole less is more mentality, but I need to cover a lot of ground without a lot of tap dancing. My point is you should play what you want, how you want, and never compromise. I've played almost every type of boutique amp out there and I still have my M4.

I have to cover a lot of ground too. I have played in bands covering three sets and a variety with a single channel and one OD pedal. You should be able to get all you need for any gig with your guitar's volume knob. :)

Anyway, I am not sure I want the living hell that was modules for me. It is like Rock Star Nick used to say...we have too many choices as guitarists and it tends to get in the way of creativity and musicianship and I felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders when I went the straight up tube amp, single or two channel.

Surprised people are selling the Mod 50s only to get back into the game using Chinese amp heads? Weird.

Tacky - an unsolicited comment on the egnater board that modules = living hell. What a nice guy!

Yea, his comments always border on trolling.

Every piece of gear's value ebbs and flows. I suspect that when Egnater is ready to release the new modular line, if the manufacture is anything less than from the USA custom shop (where it was originally), the used modular pieces will rise in value.

richedie - you have owned the Mod 50, as has been stated -- there are no surprises there. The Mesa Mark V and Electrodyne are two
completely different animals, but are readily available for demo at your nearest GC. There are much harder decisions in life than what amp to buy. Nut up and pull the trigger on something and be done with it.

Good luck in your search.

Sorry, I was out of line! And, I didn't mean it the way I said it. Anything, any piece of gear that offers a lot of choices such as digital gear, digital amps, modular systems, rack gear, etc....always turns into a huge frustration for me personally as I am very indecisive. I tend to work best with system that leave out all guess work and allow total plug in play. Even though I thought my Mod 50 sounded killer, I have to remind myself the time I spent constantly swapping modules and deciding on which to use, not to mention which tubes to use, etc. With my current amps, they are just set and forget, and these days it allows a more stress free experience for ME. So, sorry if that came out wrong! I got excited about another Mod 50 but I decided to grab an Electra Dyne for ease of use and simplicity, but still may grabe a used Randall RM50 as my friend Rob creates great custom modules I would like to have....plus owning a combo would be cool. Unless I am blown away by whatever Bruce puts out later this year.....but I still struggle with buying amps not made in the USA. :)

Plus I am training for a natural bodybuilding competition and that has me super stressed!

Sorry gents! ;)

All is forgiven. Remember, we are mature, manly men here on RT.

Honestly guys, I am still tempted to get a used Mod 50 head. Don't you all think the Mod 50 is as high end and well made as any amp? I really enjoy high end gear, well built, great trannies, etc. I am so torn between the Mesa Electradyne and Mod 50. The thing that attracts me about the Mod 50 is that I can treat it as the last amp I will ever need. My friend Rob makes unreal custom modules too.
I just want to know if Egnater still supports the Mod 50? Another nice thing is the low volume tone is great compared to the Electradyne, plus I always thought the Mod 50 tones were top shelf. Agreed? I would need a line level effects unit which is a hassle but I could deal.....maybe a line 6 M9.

The MOD50 is great, and Bruce still supports it, so no worries there.

You don't need a line level FX unit per se. Bruce makes the Loop Gadget, which will allow you to run pedals through the MOD50's loop (I do this very thing). It works perfectly.

Thanks man, I sent you a PM. Bruce said he stopped making the loop gadget. If I could find one, that would be great since I finally have my all analog pedalboard set in stone. :)

Replied to your PM. Post a 'WTB' ad in the Classifieds - you never know, someone might have a Loop Gadget sitting around not getting any use and be happy to put a few bucks in their pocket for it!

I used to own a loop gadget devise by some company I can't recall but I hated it so with my Mod 50, I just used a line level Damage Control Glass Nexus and worked much better.
