Thinking about getting a Taylor 410CE

Would it be a bad idea to get one off of e-bay without playing it first? How consistent are they from guitar to guitar? Anything else in the $1K used price range I should be looking at?

can't comment on the 410, but I love my 414ce, and every taylor I have played was consistantly well built and sounded good. From the factory, the action was a little high for me, but that was an easy fix. As long as it has been taken care of, I bet it should work out.

LOL!: editet because I confused the 410ce with the solidbody electric: my bad! I have a Takamine EF and a Yamaha APX something both of which I love to death so they might be something you could check out.

Wow...the Jackson Phil Collen is about as far removed from a Taylor as I can imagine!

I have the 514CE. Sounds great in a room close mic'ed with fresh strings but I'm not a fan of the expression system. I find it a bit too 'quacky' if that makes any sense?

I like the Matons from Australia and if I could find a Maton that felt like a Taylor but sounded like a Maton through a PA, that woud be my perfect guitar. Some of the high end Matons come close but you wont get them around 1k. Maton 808 is a nice guitar amplified though which may suit.

I loved my 414RCE. I picked it over a 410CE but I think that the addition of the rosewood back and sides sold me on the 414. Either way, the 400 series Taylors are perfect for me. The next step up you start getting a little fancier than I like on an acoustic. Taylor makes you pay for fancy.

Father's day I went to GC and sat in the corral once agin going through acoustics and played 3 400 series Talyors and each one had it's own thing going and each one was just left in the dust by this Martin D28 that was used for $1400.

I would not buy unplayed unless you know the guy selling Paige or could have someone check it out, I am in the same position looking for a Taylor but some just are not very big sounding imo.

I would not buy unplayed unless you know the guy selling Paige or could have someone check it out, I am in the same position looking for a Taylor but some just are not very big sounding imo.

Try a G series if they have one in the corral. I was shocked at how big they sounded. Much different than the regular series Taylors.

I have a 410CE and love it! They are fantastic guitars. I got mine through Wildwood Guitars and when it arrived it was set up perfectly.

I would like a cutaway but I am finding out that nothing projects and explodes like a dreadnaut so I bet I would like the GS series. I LOVE the 600 series with the maple back and sides but man they are big bucks.

Being bigger and projecting is good for some things. At first I didn't think my taylor had enough low end and boom like my other Tacoma acoustic, but after micing and recording it, it really has such an even sound that it records fantastic. Big and boomier doesn't always translate into a better recording, I find the taylor has a very well balanced sound. The expression system is different then a bridge pickup found on most acoustics, I like it for the most part, I find that most acoustic pickups are very farty sounding, while you don't really get that fart from the expressoin system, though it can sound not quite as full, but I still like it, sounds more like an acoustic then a farty machine. I hated the sound if you didn't have something fully fretted on most acoustics.

It's funny you say that, because I'm thinking along the same line. I'll pretty much never play it plugged into an amp, but the cutaway is cool for noodling. The most important thing to me with an acoustic is loud, booming tone. I think I may have to bypass the cutaway to get the tone I'm after.

I'd love to pick up an older Guild D55, but they are definitely out of my price range...

I have an older 410ce and like it a lot. Mine came with the Fishman Prefix system, and i never was a big fan of it, so I recently changed it out for a Fishman Premium Blend system that I got for $50 on ebay It sounds a lot better now when plugged in.

The Taylor 400 series isn't really booming, it is a little bit on the bright side and if anything even. A gibby roughly in the same price range will project a little more with strumming, however I preffered the taylor for finger picking, it was a hard pick for me between the gibby songwriter and the taylor, but for me, the taylor just felt better, and sounded more even and crisp. No doubt Taylors play awesome and the boards feel great. I too will not see many amplified days with an acoustic so projection is most important to me. That Martin played damn good as well, not Taylor well but very good.

I ended up passing on the Taylor 410E. When I do get another acoustic I think it will be a Martin DC-28E.

I've got a 914ce that just plain kills. i got it dirt cheap, and it was in really good condition.... a former friend of a friend (who we found out later turned out to be a meth addict jonesin for a fix at the time) sold it to me shipped for $1100. I just plain LOVE this guitar. I've thought about selling it a few times to make a profit on it...then I strum a few chords and I'm like..uhm...no...I can't sell this guitar I love my Taylor for sure!
