If a guitar sounds good, it sounds good. If its sounds crap then its crap. Who cares how many pieces it is, aslong as it sounds good then thats all that matters! :)
Don't post that in the LP forums then :D

That is how my Hamer is, I play classical style and I can feel that guitar's body just buzzing in certain places :inlove: Just rings for days.

I picked up a early 70s LP custom for cheap several weeks ago and it had nothing, good thing I sold it to a collector the next day ;) Goood luck with the hunt and I agree, do not buy unless you can play it.

Yup you know its good when you can feel the guitar ringing out chords for ages!!

Some guy in Fairfield had it in college and was cleaning out his basement, I took it off his hands :D

It was not a good guitar, I was going to spam it here but it just was not a good guitar and could not lie about it. The colloector that bought it was more concerned about the name and year so I had no issue selling it to him

Ok so i just spent the day at Denmark Street in London and got to try out a bunch of 70's LP Customs!

The ones i tried out were:
78 LP Custom in black
76 LP Custom in black
76 LP Custom Wine Red
76 LP Custom in black with all chrome hardware
74 LP Custom in black.

Every single one of them felt totally different and sounded different. I initially was interested in trying the 78 in the Vintage and Rare shop. Tried it out but wasnt blown away.. then tested out the 74 and two 76's. The Black 76 sounded much better than the 78 and the 74.. but still it didnt leave me wanting to buy it.

I went over the road to Angel Music and they had 2 76 LP Customs. 1 in Wine Red and another that was Black but had all chrome hardware. I tried out the black one and it was better than all the others i tried by far.. really resonated well and chords rung out for ages. Also it wasnt as heavy as the others, maybe just a lb or so lighter. Spent some time shredding away on it to get a good feel of the guitar and all in all i left the shop really thinking about it. The price was extremely reasonable too.. only thing is it didnt include the original Gibson case, but that didnt bother me much.

Im pretty sure my best bet would be to sell my R7 Goldtop on Ebay, then use the cash to buy an LP Custom and use the leftover cash on a re-fret.

So why the need for the refret, do you no like the fretless wonders?

First thing I did to my 79 was get a refret ... best thing I ever did ;)

Out of interest Dan what sort of prices were that lot going for ?

Why do you say that, what was wrong with the original frets? Were they worn out?

Vintage and rare had them for £2700 in worn beaten up condition. Rediculous price IMO. The shop over the road had 2 of the same year LP Customs (76) priced at £1499 and £1599. Granted they didnt have the original Gibson Case, but to be honest having the original case doesnt warrant it being £1200 more expensive!! :gethim:

Aye, it was a fretless, fretless wonder     plays GREAT now ;)

Haha now i know why they called em the fretless wonder.... the ones i tried, all had original frets. They were so worn out and low, that they were actually level with the fretboard!!! :D

So what frets do you replace the fretless wonders when you replace them? Does it hurt the value of the guitar?

I am going to get my LP custom back from the luthier this week and he mentioned that I should probably replace the frets at some point fairly soon as they are a bit uneven and fairly worn down. I like the frets being so low, to me it makes the guitar play fast. Just looking for what the general path is with these early 70's customs....

I think mine was Dunlop 6105 fret wire, didn't want them too big.
The thing with old Customs is that the binding can shrink when you take it off :( mine was really yellowed and even that had come off through to the layer underneath again so was starting to be white again .. haha .. My tech did a great job of leaving the binding on and pulling the frets, no splits or anything, and he replaced them and trimmed the edges perfectly.
At the end of the day my 79 is my workhorse, it's beat to shit and the saddles are so corroded i doubt it'll ever intonate ever again so I ain't bothered about value or resale.

Iv wanted a Custom for so long now.. I bought my R7 VOS Goldtop a few years ago because it was a good deal and it was also my first real LP.

I got to try a bunch of 70's LP Customs a while back, and found that i really like the late 70's Customs with the maple neck. One that i got to try sounded and felt amazing.. but i couldnt afford it. Been kicking myself ever since, as i liked it much more than my R7 LP and it just was perfect for me.

So im thinking of selling my R7 Goldtop LP and hunting down a late 70's Black LP Custom. Since trying that one before, i know what i want and how it should sound/feel and everything so its just a case of trying enough until i find what i want for the right price...

sound like a good idea or am i crazy? :)
I love 70s Customs...plus they sound way beefier and less honky than Standards.
