I was messing around yesterday and putting together a gig rig. Decided to check the 20th X and the Shiva out on Bogner front load and rear load cabs side by side. Each amp was plugged into to one 16 ohm rearload 412 V30 cab and a 16 ohm front load all V30 cab. I was really deciding on cabs to use but the experiment turned into which amp has the biggest bottom end and balls. to make a long story short, the 20th Shiva with 6550's outshined the 20X, not by a little bit, but a lot when it came to bottom end, and holding together the gain without falling apart. Fuck me I was surprised and floored. The 20X of course has many more things going for it, but dammit I was shocked. This was after a few hours of band practice, but I am going to go out and check it out again while my ears are rested.

Will make some quick clips with this new Zoom video thingy today and you can decide. I never reached a conclusion on the cabs, but the front load does project a little more, but the rear will have more bottom end. Probably, the conclusion is going to be use two cabs with the head, one of each and get the best of both camps.

Steve

I am buying a Shiva / Ube TJ rig now. Shiva is a sweet amp. I gotta have something that will clean up and ring pretty sweet with some burn using a Strat and also bring some fat stuff with the TJ to thicken it all up on high gain. Shiva seems to play well with others. Just one opinion...

Interested to hear how this works out for you.

You should take a look at the 20th XTC alone, rather than both those amps before you make a decision. It is an amazing amp with tons of tone.

MEGA +1

I am a little disappointed in the ole 20th XTC. Setting up for an outdoor gig tomorrow and I am using my Fortin Moose Knuckle mod and my Aldrich mod. I took the XTC with me to try out at decent volume and was shocked by the lack of bottom end with the Blue/Red channels up around 11:00. I tweaked and twisted and couldn't get shit out of it. Hope it doesn't turn into a 100 watt bedroom amp. Dammit....

What kind of cab? I've got a Bogner 4x12 with M75 and get plenty of bottom.

Front load V30's. Typically the most bottom heavy thing with all the others. For moderate volumes, it is great. At outdoor volumes, I just could tweak it for shit. Maybe I got a fucked up tweaker :D

I need my old Uberschall back.

Maybe pick up a 2x15 cab and add that to the mix?? :dunno:

Wouldn't be the first time...

Hmm, mine thumps pretty good, especially when turned up. I'm sure you know this, but the XTC is typically mated with the rear-loaded cab. I know Paul Rivera thinks it's essential to put V30's in a rear-loaded cab.

Needs a thump mod.......

Maybe you mean punch, depth and focused?
If so, I know what'cha mean!

I find it hard to believe that it lacks punch, my 101b had tons!

I think a lot of this, Steve, is playing outdoors... I've had the experience of feeling like my entire bottom end just vanished when playing an outdoor venue. Same settings indoors - thunder. It's just resonance and reverberation man... I'm guessing from the 10th row of those in the pit, it still sounds pounding, it's just the vibrations aren't there and you think the low end is goners.

Maybe I'm wrong with my assumption, but I had to toss this out there...

Peace,
Mo
