Vox tone question - Similar to the above; the AC30 is the one I think of, but if you only have one amp, which would you pick to cover all things Vox?
Matchless C-Series...it's a Vox inspired amp but essentially bullet-proof (unlike Vox). I dumped an AC30 immediately after demoing a Matchless DC-30. IMO, the Matchless does everything that the Vox does, but better and more reliably.
^ truth.
I did some research on the Matchless stuff last night. I was familiar with the brand but hadn't spent any time looking at them before this. The C-30 seemed to have a lot of possibilities. It sure is spendy, though. I'd like to try one live, but like most boutique and niche gear, that's going to be hard to do in the middle of the corn field where I live...
Yeah, they definitely aren't cheap. That said, with Matchless you truly do get what you pay for (much more so than many other "boutique" amps). True point-to-point wiring (not a board of any type to be found), proprietary hand wound transformers, top notch construction throughout...bullet proof. The Matchless that I've kept (I've had several) is a '97 Chieftain that has been gigged steadily since then. I've never had to do a thing to it beyond tube changes. It's more of a Marshall/Vox "tweener" than the C-Series but they are both stellar amps.
Just so you can see the manner of construction that I'm speaking of, here are a couple of guy shots from my Chieftain:
