As a lad born and raised in Massachusetts, my favorite winged animal is the Eastern Bluebird. Not just because they are a staple of this area, but because they hold a sentimental value to me as well.
Without getting too deep in to it, my grandfather passed when I was 20. I was old enough to know him, but I didn’t have any of my life figured out yet. Years later I went in to the trades, which was what my grandfather did his whole life. I now live in his old house that he built and I feel like I am “getting to know him” through repairing and updating the house. I can see a bit of how his brain worked by how he wired and plumbed the house.
In fact I now work at the same campus that he once worked for. I took over for his old boss when he retired.
Anyways I told you that to tell you this; of all the things in the house I am updating, the one thing I have not and will not touch are the bluebird houses he and I built together when I was a kid. They are still hanging from the same fence, barely holding together, but they still get a family of blue birds every year. It really evokes the warm and fuzzies every time I see a bluebird in a house or in the yard.
I can’t draw at all, but I do have a picture of our lovely bluebird house. I’m teaching my daughters about them and as the 4th generation to live in this house, I hope that they can someday pass it on to the 5th generation.
