i've heard that maple fretboards are NOT to be cleaned with ANY products whatsoever, but then i've also heard to use lemon oil, mineral oil, etc.

i've got about 15 years of caked up gunk/light dirt all over the place. what's the best way to get a maple fretboard in better than gunky condition?

A cloth with simple water and just rub hard...that's all I use. Maybe use some fine 0000 steel wool afterwards once it dries to get the grain back down and smooth again.
I like when maple boards get a bit worn-in looking, but I don't care for the gunk.
Lemon oil and all that stuff is for rosewood fretboards to keep them from drying out, maple doesn't need it.

yeah, the wear on it i definitely am not averse to, but the gunk that's built up on each side of every fret and the dirt on the top and bottom definitely has to go.

Has anyone tried this stuff on a maple board? I need to clean one of my maple boards as well? Besides I've been dying to try the YouTube feature.

Naphtha or lighter fluid (same thing) and a rag. Anything like sand paper, razor blade or even steel wool is going to dull/remove finish.

Gibson makes a Conditioner for fretboards,it's not cheap but it works good.

Most maple boards are sealed, so you don't oil them. I use warm soapy water and a toothbrush to get the schmutz off and wipe dry. That's it.

Yes. Don't. You will kick yourself when you start trying to get all of the black crap off of the board. The chemical in the cloth turns it black from the frets. The stuff work awesome on the frets. With a Maple board I taped off the board and just did the frets. Great stuff on a dark board or just for frets.

This

I know peavey recommended endust sprayed lightly on a rag to clean the wolfies necks which are unfinished. Have never cleaned mine since new. It's quite funky. EBMM has wipes they sell for they're unfinished necks. Naptha for finished maple.

Spit and a rag actually works.pretty good.

I have done a lot of searching on the proper way to clean a maple board, and have never come across a definitive way to do it correctly without harming it. Thats the general impression I got from looking at the video.

I have also used a soft cloth and a very light amount of naptha. It works pretty well. I have a guitar that has really seen some nasty business, so I did go the naptha route. However, I'm a little wary of it. It's smart to use warm soapy water on a soft cloth first. That is really the best thing

Wolfies have an oil finish. Some sort of gunstock oil...was it Tru-Oil or something like that? Basically the same stuff SD Charvels use.

The EBMM Axis has a gunstock oil finish. Wolfies are bare wood...

I clean both my Wolfie and Jackson PC1 (Both bare maple) with 0000steel wool. Keeps the frets nice and shiny as well.

EBMM uses Tru Oil, and wax.

Charvel uses Watco Danish oil...

Wolfies are bare wood if I am not mistaken.

I did own a Wolfie, I used tung oil for the neck, it was perfect.

Yea correct. Ebmm uses it too. I Should have specified unfinished as in no clear coat or paint. My mistake.
Tru oil is good stuff. I did my strat neck with it.
Not sure on the peavey although I think they all have some oil or sealer, etc... on them.
