So name some album or songs guitar tones that didn't sound good to you at first but then you learned to appreciate it. I'll start first:

Faith No More - angel dust

When I first heard that album I was blown away by how good it was but I thought the tone was shit. Sounded like a solid state peavey (it's a mesa mark iii), but then over the years it grew on me and I also realized partly why I disliked it in the first place. Much of the rhythm guitars are recorded mono it seems, or panned close to the centre and they seem to have a bit of chorus effect on them that kinda dates it. Now I couldn't imagine it sounding any different.

I originally didn't like Timo Tolkki's Stratovarius Laney tones, but now I love them.

I think i just didn't like the brittle thinness of them at the time

Everyone's tone sounds the fucking same now, so it seems like a brilliant move to zag when everyone is zigging now

They fucked over Jim Martin on that album and intentionally buried his guitars. I was told it was a big reason for his departure from the band. One of my favorite albums ever, but it would be cool to hear it remixed with the keyboards potted down and the guitars more upfront.

When I first heard Angel Dust, lots of elements seemed out of place and generally annoying; including the guitar tones. About 100 listens later, I came to understand it as one of the greatest rock recordings of all time. It's influence on modern music is so prevalent it can't even be measured accurately. Masterpiece.

When I first heard Vulgar in ‘92, hated the guitar sound but the overall songs grew on me and something clicked to where the guitar sound was perfect for the songs and I really liked it in that context. Apart from that I can’t think of a tone that I hated then loved. More the other way round.
Possibly Melissa… I didn’t hate but thought it wasn’t as good as DBTO. But now I really dig it. Kind of in the same way speeddemon felt about Ghost, which added to how much I thought Ghost was trying to cop Mercyful Fate.

Exactly, @skoora I always felt Ghost was going for this 70's occult/eerie pop rock version of Blue Oyster Cult meets Mercyful Fate on their earliest stuff.
First time I saw 'em live on GMM was in 2011 I believe... They kicked so much ass live.
(On a different note, and I'm not even that much into brutal death metal, but Fleshgod Apocalypse kicked mayor ass back then as well live).
