Being dead doesn't matter IMHO.
If a vendor goes out of business and nobody takes over, then sure, deletion makes sense.
However, being dormant isn't the same thing as being dead; a sub-forum can see random activity at any time. All it takes is one customer or for someone to take an interest in a product.
This said, I stand by my earlier recommendations as to how to keep up with new / unread posts whilst excluding sub-forums you're not interested in. Let's face it 'though, it's really only the classifieds section that adds substantially to the results, so in fact it's only 2 clicks to customise before hitting the "New Posts" link.
