Man there are so many it makes your head spin. Bogner has the Helios, Shiva, Goldfinger, XTC, + more, Friedman, Splawn, Wizard, Metropoulos, Bray, etc... Therefore, I want to know what you regard as the top 10 best modded Marshall style amps. Here's a crack at it:

1. Bogner Helios
2. Metropoulos Metroplex
3. Friedman Smallbox
4. David Bray 4550
5. Bogner Goldfinger 90
6. Splawn Quickrod
7. Badcat Hot Cat 30
8. Fargen Olde 800
9. Bigtone Studio Plex
10. Suhr Badger

Cameron, Fortin, and Henning have to be on that list somewhere...

EDIT: Can't believe I left Egnater off my list, I have 2 2203s with his Megadrive mod (added gain stage), tube EFX loop, and low end density control...GREAT amps !!!

Of the amps I've owned/played....

1. Cameron modded
2. Fortin/Gower modded
3. Golub Lead mod
4. Voodoo modded
5. Lee Jackson modded
6. FJA modded
7. Friedman modded
8. Splawn modded

All single channel 800/JMPs, splitting hairs a bit but that was my experience. The Cameron's were the best by a good margin though.

Top ten ways to mod a Marshall to sound like there's an SD-1 in front of it! Joking. Kinda.

I have never heard a SD-1 in front of any Marshall sound like my Fortin...Please show me how that works.

Ok for that one maybe use an OD808 instead.

One of the best tones out there IMO....That's all i play anymore.....Stock JMP boosted....Mark Cameron told me on many occasions that is the best tone out there... And when he mods an amp he has to achieve a better tone than the boosted Marshall....Which is not easy...

I like that.....My vote also

I haven't played 10, so I can't really play this game haha. :)

The Ceriatones Chupa and Yeti sound better than any other Marshall mod I've owned, including Fortin Bones and Cameron CCV. I sold my Chupacabra once I got a CCV. As Trump would say, "YUGE mistake. Tremendous mistake. Know someone who did the same thing... Nice guy, good friend of mine... Really knows how to cook a steak." I bought it back earlier this year and it really is one of my favorite amps of all time. Sounds like an angry pissed off jaguar through a Bogner 4x12 with Greenbacks.

CCV was ok. Lacked something though. Sounded kinda dark and nowhere near any of the clips I've seen of Mark demoing it. Fortin was ok. Also kinda dark. But very tight, yet nice and bouncy in the low-end somehow. Great FX loop. Built well. But ultimately not the sound I was going for. The Bones is a "rock" amp. I had a hard time getting a real aggressive high-gain modern rock/metal sound from it.

Had a Bad Cat Hot Cat a few years ago. I wouldn't consider that even remotely close to anything "Marshall."

EDIT:
Oh wait, I have played a Friedman BE and Smallbox. Wasn't a fan. Dark and smooth, and a sort of a weird quality to the gain/clipping.

I wouldn't consider the CCV to be at all a Marshally sound. It's one of my favorite amps ever, but not Marshally. I'd say the Atomica and probably his other mods which I haven't tried (I've only tried an Old Bitch and own a CCV and Atomica) are his Marshally sounding amps.

I agree with the names mentioned above and would consider Cameron to be the overall best but would also add Kruse up there. I have JCM800 with his V5 mod and it sounds terrific! I like how it's bright and has great upper mids, while from my experience some of the other Marshall modders like Gower, Friedman, and Cameron often have a darker take on the Marshall sound which is fine and they also sound really great, but I always thought of a true Marshall sound as being bright with an upper mid growl, which the Kruse V5 and Helios have in spades

I can't understand how many Marshall haters there are and still it has to be the top emulated amp even down to the head cover ... Marshall all the way for me

-and I thought you were gonna pull the ole Jan Brady thing-

I used to have a Lee Jackson Metaltronix M-1000. I think it should be on the list.

I don't think there's anyone better at modding a Marshall than Mark Cameron.

I've played a few different modded Marshall amps over the years, including a few real Jose's, and if we're actually talking about a legit Marshall that's been modded, Mark would be my first choice.

If we're talking about newer stuff, the coolest couple of things I've played recently have been from Friedman and Henning.

He still does.

Brian/BFG is another dude that can do whatever you want to a Marshmellow.

Don't know if he can be talked into it anymore, but Andy Marshall/THD used to do amazing mods. He modded a '75 50w for me 25-ish years ago that sounded like a cave troll clearing the back of its throat.

:D

1. My modded JTM45RI.

- I did a full PTP board transfusion (mid 60s spec values), MM OT, VA KT66s, Valvo-labeled Mullards + Mullard CV4004 in PI

- Then 10 years later, I modded again, changing the tone stack to SL specs, changing to EH 6CA7s, setting the bias to run at 100V with variac

supergrindy
