I owned a couple engl se, the el34 version and the 6l6, both sounded great, and was my favorite amp at the time, but… both had quality issues and was a pain in the ass to get fixed. Engl support sucked when velvet distribution was running the show, i ended up getting rid of both of them.

1: Friedman BE100
2: Name Of Sound CA20 (boutique french amplifier)
3: ENGL Special Edition

Mesa Mark IV-a
Diezel Herbert boosted
Uberschall Rev Blue boosted- unpopular choice around here but ive used it live a bunch of times and been playing ubers since 2004, i played the rev green but i like the rev blue the best.

Ive owned about 70 amps, really hard to pick just 3.

Which boosts do you use ?

I have a Fortin 33 (suits the Herbert like a glove for downtunings), Fortin modded ts808 and a lichlaerm TKIY. All of them are excellent.

Maxon od808

I tried a few others like the sd-1, maxon od-9, khdk ghoul screamer, ZW44, and a couple others, but i always revert back to my 808.
I have a Vemuram TSV808 but i havent tried it to clean boost high gain amps, i use it with clean amps as a overdrive, but i should try it with the herbert or my uber to see how it sounds.

Currently in no particular order:
  • Headfirst Alta
  • Ground Zero Hellion
  • Naylor Superdrive 100
Some honorable mentions include:
  • Laney L50H Lionheart
  • Peters Pro Dual Channel Halo/Vega
  • Monomyth Skeleton Key
  • Zinky MOFO
  • Mesa Mark III Red Stripe
  • Marshall Vintage Modern 2466
Just ordered a SonicTone Loyalist with a custom mod after playing one the other day. We'll see where it lands when I get it in about a month and can play it through my own cabs. I'm 99.99% sure it'll at least land at the top of the honorable mentions category if not make it into my top 5.
The alta and hellion are two that I've wanted to try for a while. Are they different enough to justify both?

Mesa Mark VII combo
Mesa Filmore 100 combo
Mesa TT-800 with 1x15 and 2x10

Ampeg SVT Classic with 8x10

Tonally, there's a small area of overlap if you set the knobs right. Overall they are more than different enough to have both.
The Alta leans all the way onto the Marshall style upper mid grind.
The Hellion has Marshall DNA, but subtly adds extra lower mids; like a Marshall/Mesa mix.

Functionally, the are very different.
The Alta is 3 channel with Vintage/Modern mode, 2 bright switches, and diode. You can get a good range of sounds across the 3 channels and are MIDI switchable.
The Hellion is 1 channel, but has features such as the aura knob, or being able to dial in the amount of diode clipping that really let you fine tune your sound.

The Alta and Hellion are great amps. You couldn't go wrong with either, but definitely worth having both if you can.
