Wanted to see what other tube amp users out there for their live sound as far as things like.. what do you Mic your cab using... do you use 1 mic? 2 mics? do you use something like Torpedo Captor X to FOG and use your cab for stage volume?

Thanks for your replies.

Cheers

Hah!

For most gigs (bars, etc.) I don't put guitar through the PA. Just a shield/diffuser in front of the cabinet (so I can crank it, hear it, and it doesn't kill anyone). For anything larger I use a Blubox (IR loader/DI) rather than a mic. Makes it easy and reliable.

What cab/speaker(s) do you use live?

Egnater tourmaster 412A, with celestion vintage 30s. Just a single 57.

Wait...you guys actually leave your basements and play in front of people?

Single SM-57 1 inch in from outside edge of cone.

When I'm too lazy to mic, I've had good luck with a Hughes and Kettner Redbox.

Yes, believe it or not some of us do.View attachment 215470
That's not fair! One of ya'll let me sit in! I haven't played live since about 2001 and I miss it. Had all these plans to do an 80s cover group with my stage character I created, run around the stage, go out in the crowd and play a solo in front of the one girl that looks like she was dragged there by her friends, get free drinks, etc...but covid killed that. I miss having a small group of dudes just idolizing you from the front row, because as we know, girls never come to rock shows.

Acrylic cab blockers for bars, wooden stages, or small clubs.

Outdoors or large stages I pointed both cabs frontside and let her rip.

Professional gigs that were also large and annual type of ordeals, the sound engineers always mic’d both cabinets each with one sm57 to capture the stereo effects for FOH.

Thanks guys.. SM57 is what I am using right now. Thinking about blending it with some sort of a Cab sim IR... Just to have extra flavour to the 57.

I got an E609, and I kinda like it over a 57. I'm fine with a 57 though.

For bass, I mic my 8x10 with an Audix D6 for my IEMs and FOH.

Always mic'd for live gigs.Whether it's the local 50 seat watering hole, church, school, festival, or arena on the big stage, it's always a 57 on a cab,e906 on another cab.F.o.h. loves the blend of the two.

The place we play most uses E906s to mic the cabs. Taking it further though, I map all of my cabs by testing recorded tones at home to find the best sounding speaker & mark the exact place to put the mic with tape / etc. so we're consistent at shows. It drives me nuts when a guy just has his mic in a random place eyeballed on a dark stage.

You can’t go wrong using a 57 on a tube amp

Agreed! Used to much prefer the E609 and MD421, but more and more I'm liking the SM57.

Pic from last gig earlier this month (sorry, they already took down the mic, but it was just a single 57). I've never had 2 mics on a cab live. I think it'd just take too much time when we're all scrambling just to set up, sound check, and play. I am curious about using something like the Captor X or Suhr Reactive Load IR. I'm always impressed with the tones Bxlxaxkxe gets on his youtube channel using IRs and the other guitarist and I already use FM3s straight to PA for longer traveling tours. That said, I always enjoy having a cab on stage pushing air.

Single SM57 on my 2x12 cab, and if I don't have a monitor I put the front feet of the cab on a 2x4 to aim it more towards my head.

From last week- sorry about the pole in the pic!
