Just curious as to when they changed the name of this series

Well, duh.......I mean Tourmaster......gotta stop thinkin` in those mesa Boogie terms......sorry. But, since we`re here now, how about that tube bias point????

Not sure what your question is. The bias test point is for the sum of the 4 tubes. So whatever the individual MV for a tube is multiplied by 4. As you should know also that the power grid becomes unable to be used if you use any other tube but the 5881 or 6l6. The other tubes will only allow you to run in 100 or 50 watt mode.

Thanks for that info, Jeff. Is the power grid compatible with a KT66 as it is a derivative of the 6L6? I am curious as to why it (power grid option) works with ONLY the 6L6 types. Thanks, TM

I believe it ends up sounding like crap when you put the other tubes in, not just another tone color.

Ya we really try to steer customers away from changing out the tubes. It really messes up the bias and the use of the power grid.

Oh man really?!? Milf Lessons!!! Ive been waiting forever for that to come out! :jedi: :force: :jerkit:

Well.....MILF and various tag team sports aside (ahem!)......
thanks again for the info, Jeff.
I guess I am a little confused. I cut & pasted a question from myself and an answer from you in an earlier thread.....goes like this:

Q: I have a few general ???? about the amp.
1- Is it possible to change power tubes to EL34, 6550, KT 66s-77s-88s etc. If so what are the limits? Will it take as low as a 6V6 or as high as 6550?????

A:Yes you can use any tube. The power grid becomes on 50 or 100 watts and nothing else.

Now you are saying that you would discourage anyone from changing the tubes. Am I understanding correctly that you are recommending ONLY the GT 6L6 that came with the amp....that no other 6L6 will work. please clarify.

I understand if you are publicly coy about this. From a manufacturers` view point I know you can`t have just every body and any body swapping out the tubes. I have owned (and still own) several Rivera amps. I have changed tube types and set biasing many times on these amps. Several years ago I called Rivera to get some biasing info that wasn`t in the manual. I was lucky enough to have Paul himself take the call. He was very nice and gave me great detailed info on the bias settings for each amp for a variety of tubes.

After doing this for several years, I have had NO problems at all with these amps or tubes. I am grateful that you guys put test points on this amp :) as it is a PAIN to do on the Riveras.
personally I have not had good experiences with Groove Tube Tubes. They are not my favorite, but again, from a manufacturers` stance, I understand that you need a readily available supply of new, dependable (and cheap) tubes, but I can`t see just buying Groove Tube 6l6s to replace these with. More info is needed. After first saying "use any tube", now you won`t commit to even saying if a KT66 is acceptable.
I am not trying to be a pain or a thorn in your side here. just trying to gain some knowledge about the $1500 amp I just bought.

Hey guys lets keep to the subject.....................

Jeff can you get rid of this post ?

My wife dosent need to see me reading the egnater forum and having to explain to her why its there,
nor the young egnater up and comers at church, whom I recommend this forum to.

Its unprofessional and uncalled for.

Thanks for your concern.

whhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeee.........shhhhhoooooooo (the sound of wind blowing through the desert). All that`s missing now is the tumbleweeds.

Guitardo,

I'd say you can use any type of 6L6 or 5881. Doesnt have to be Groove Tubes. But I think Jeff means that if you use a different TYPE (not brand) such as a EL34, that you dont get the power grid option and only get 50 or 100 watts.

Yeah, I understand that.....but as you can see I`m getting mixed messages from the Egnater guys. First they say "yeah, any tube". then they backtrack.....then I send an e-mail (off the boards) to them to clarify if I can use any 6L6 such as a KT66.....no response. I believe they are ignoring this thread on purpose. They respond to the request to remove the renegade, but ignore the subject of this post/question.

Sorry, but that is not good customer service. I think I might just return the amp and take a look at the Randall line. Not a biggie.....I just don`t like the harsh sound of these 6l6s.....that`s all. I ran the pre on the Tourmaster in to the power section of my Rivera TBR1 with 6Ca7s and wow, what a difference....but you know they are in love with this magic piece of Russian crap! I am not.
I am sure thay will continue to ignore this new customer.

Sorry you feel you have been mistreated, it was never in a million years intended. I have a family and have spent the last week with them and I have been on the board and checking my email on a very limited basis. I am sorry for not responding as soon as you posted.

In regards to responding to the renegade post. I was emailed to my personal account by a customer who asked me to go online and remove it, I did just that. Yes it took priority over your question. Sorry you feel that it was a poor choice on my part. It was after all a uncalled for post. Your question would have been answered but I guess we are not fast enough.

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU USE ONLY 5881 OR 6L6 TUBES DOES NOT MATTER WHICH BRAND. IF YOU CHOOSE TO USE A DIFFERENT TUBE THE AMP WILL NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY.

I did not back pedal. We thought about it and just simply decided to tell you that my above statement was our position. We are very sorry you are unhappy with our customer service. It has never been questioned to my knowledge. We wish you the best with whichever amp you decide to use. If you do not like 5881 tubes in this amp then we are not offended at all if you don't buy it.

I guess you dont have to agree with my term of backpedaling...lets call it flip-flopping, when you say one thing and then say another, it can be referred to as many things. Fact is you said one thing, then another after "we" thought it over. never mind.

as far as responding to e-mail. I find it insulting that you would respond to other folks messages and ignore both my e-mail and this post. never mind. No hard feelings, just a bad taste in my mouth.

Guitardo,

Come on bro, Jeff is a one man customer service department, and HE WAS ON VACATION!!!!!

When I'm on vacation, I'll check my personal email, but I NEVER look at my work email. I tackle that when I get back. You can probably imagine that Jeff had a really crowded inbox by the time he got back, and was just trying to get to everything in order, along with everything else he had to do.

For the Guitar Center line of products if you cant get Jeff, maybe you can try 877-EGNATER. Ive never called it, but that is the number listed on the website.

When you call that number you talk to John Ewing (who frequents this forum) and he is a very nice, helpful guy. However, Jeff is just as nice and helpful and Egnater's customer support has always been top-notch. Retardo, I mean Guitardo, you asked a pretty basic question that is covered in the user's manual and you're bitching because you didn't get immediate attention over a holiday weekend. Grow up, dude.

Thanks for the brilliant input VaGino.... I mean Gino!
Are you sure its only peoples minds you are BLOWING?
