Interested in trying my hand at a tube preamp with my Rocktron Velocity 150.

All thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated!

Btw, wouldnt a complete Engl rack be cool!

I ran a ADA MP1 into a SS Randall power amp. It sounded pretty good at low to mid volumes. But, to me, SS power sections seem to fall apart at high volumes.

I agree...

I had your Pro-Gap, and velocity, totally fun at home... only gigged twice cause the Velocity just didn't "Push" right... Tube pre would be cool with it I guess, but do you gig?

Invest in a Tube power section if ya gonna go that way...

I played through the rocktron velocity 150 and Rocktron voodoo valve preamp years ago and had several positive comments about my tone. I used the same poweramp with a Marshall preamp and a Peavey Rockmaster preamp. I had the power amp for a long time before switching over to heads. The Rocktron velocity power amps back in the day when they were still made in America sounded very good. I am not sure about the newer ones. As soon as I switched over to an all tube set up I couldnt use it any more. Like stated above, you just don't get the push. If you have a good P.A. and sound guy he can make that set up sound really good through the fronts and the monitors. It's not every one's cup of tea to play through a blazing 100 watt head and 4x12 cabs. So to each his own. All I know is when I gigged out with the rocktron gear and had a good P.A. system and sound guy it did it's job. The sound man liked it because it didn't blast him out of the room. I gigged the Rocktron set up every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and some Sundays for about two years straight. It always worked with no issues what so ever.

I use Marshall Valvestate 80 / 80 power amps with everything from a VooDu Valve to a JMP-1 and I can get killer tones out of all of them.

I've used the old Velocity 300 and 250 with an E530, Rocktron Piranha and a Digitech 2112 and all worked well live for me. Oddly enough both of those power amps sounded best with the 2112.

Prior to grabbing a Mesa 2:90 in '92, I ran my MP-1 into a QSC 400w power amp for a few years. It sounded pretty good but stepping up to the Mesa was the best thing that I had done to that point to get a "bigger", warmer tone.

I'll let you know shortly, just ordered a new touring rig, an engl e530 tube preamp, and the rocktron velocity 300 power amp. Going to throw it into a 2 space rack and carry it on as my overhead luggage for tour and fly dates. I'm hoping it will sound cool, should have it together in the next week or so. The engl preamp has some great reviews and sounds really good to my ear from what ive heard, and i think the velocity is cool with the resonance and presence controls, which is why i ended up buying it. stand by...

got it .... the velocity is great, having the presence and depth control makes all the difference in being able to really dial in the tone. The engl preamp sounds excellent to!

Nice.

I'd love to crank up a full valve amp and then slave that into a good quality but small Class D solid state poweramp for the output volume.
