I'm sold...this is a seriously badass little piece of gear....I got a chance to play one a few weeks back with a 50 watt Marshall JMP head and it worked awesome...got me thinking

It's accepted that Todd Duane is a monster already, but here's a few clips with him using it that I'm guessing people will like...

I've owned a couple of Hot Plates and never had one in the same room with a UA to compare. I think the Hot Plate is great but my biggest gripe is the preset clicks of reduction. The UA works with a smooth reduction (much like the BadCat leash...)

Overall the comments (and my admitted brief encounter) point to less tone suck with UA's compard to other units. Expensive though.....There's one particular well known gear freak on the Les Paul Forum swearing this is the greatest invention ever.

How much do they go for? Wish I did a research before jumping on Hot Plate. Hope I like it.

I totally understand the preset vs. smooth deal though. I wish Hot Plate was like that.

http://www.ultimateattenuator.com/ base price is $450 :scared:
Daaamn. Well.. I really hope I LOVE the Hot Plate lol.

I don't think I'll need more than -4db or -8db MAX (I live in a house and neighbors aren't even home at my playing hours). I've heard Hot Plate is pretty transparent on -4 and -8 would you agree?

Who is Todd duane?

:hys:

I got one several months ago to go with my plexi - it is awesome. I got a Hot Plate too. I say they work equally good, but have different applications. I got the UA with 2 volumes so I have a rhythm and solo volume. I did some comparison clips recording the plexi cranked, then with the UA at a sane volume - I couldn't hardly tell them apart. But, here's where to go to get them cheaper than the site you listed

http://hoelectronics.com/

He's the guy that actually makes 'em and he will sell you one cheaper than the site you have listed.

Also, here's a review to check out

I had the Ho version (same thing as the overpriced Ultimate) and by the looks of the inside, I didn't feel comfortable running my amp through that thing, no matter how good it sounds. It's 32ohm I believe as well. I'll take a good master volume any day. It did sound like it was "Just Barely On".

According to what I've read (and it must be true because it was on the Internet) the ohm rating is not a critical factor because the unit sees the speakers for whatever load is presented, so you can run any cab...

Also, according to what I've read (and it also must be true because it was on the Internet) this unit uses a form of re-amping because it supposedly uses a solid state amp of some sort in it:

" An attenuator with a power supply? What’s that all about? That’s where the really interesting part of the design comes into play – the unit’s loaded signal from the amp then serves as an input to an active-powered amplification circuit inside “The Ultimate Attenuator” which then transfers the final powered signal to the speaker. One continuously variable volume pot on the outside front panel controls the final output volume and can go from completely off to full power and everything in between.

The concept itself is similar to the early Edward Van Halen type of a setup that we featured earlier at LegendaryTones where his Marshall amplifier was first put through a dummy load, then re-amplified through a power amplifier to his final speakers. In this case however, it’s all in one box!"

Todd Duane is one of those first name twice guys, like "Billy Bob" or "Ronnie Earl", he took the Esteban Guitar Class and learned it real good

i thought it was the best attenuator i'd heard as well, but i agree the early model looked like it would explode if you sneezed on it.

I picked one up a couple of weeks ago. It definitely is badass. The current build quality is head and shoulders above what it was. I'm not exactly sure what's going on with the manufacturing, but I think the Magus folks are building them to their own specs now.
